If there’s one actor whose name guarantees quality, it’s Tom Hanks.

This week, his next project has been officially announced, promising an intriguing experience for audiences. Sony Pictures revealed that The Comebacker, a baseball drama starring Hanks, will hit theatres on 30 July 2027.

Directed by Marielle Heller, who also wrote the screenplay, the film is based on Dave Eggers’ 2024 short story of the same name.

The premise reflects the understated charm typical of Hanks’ best roles. In the film, Hanks portrays a baseball pitching coach whose life changes dramatically after being struck on the head by a ball while on the pitcher’s mound.

The film explores the effects of this incident on his life.

Produced by Hanks’ own company, Playtone, along with Leah Holzer and in partnership with Major League Baseball, the July 30 release strategically aligns with the MLB season, intensifying playoff races.

The collaborative reunion between Hanks and Heller adds excitement to this announcement.

They previously worked together on A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood in 2019, in which Hanks embodied the beloved children’s television presenter Fred Rogers.

This performance, filled with warmth and subtlety, earned him a Golden Globe nomination, showcasing his talent for empathetic storytelling.

Heller has since directed Nightbitch, featuring Amy Adams, highlighting her skill in handling intimate, character-focused narratives with confidence.

Heller’s filmography is notable for those unfamiliar with her work. Films like The Diary of a Teenage Girl and Can You Ever Forgive Me? The latter earned an Oscar nomination for Melissa McCarthy, demonstrating her ability to portray complex human stories with wit and sensitivity. The Comebacker fits neatly within this tradition.

This film also marks Hanks’ return to a genre he’s familiar with. He previously starred in the 1992 classic A League of Their Own, directed by Penny Marshall, playing manager Jimmy Dugan alongside Geena Davis, Madonna, Lori Petty, and Rosie O’Donnell.

That film gave us the iconic line, “There’s no crying in baseball.” Now, thirty-five years later, Hanks returns to the diamond in a much quieter role that focuses on internal change rather than comedy.

Recently, Hanks has been busy as well. He lent his voice to Woody in Toy Story 5, the much-anticipated continuation of Pixar’s iconic franchise.

He also appeared in Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme and Robert Zemeckis’ Here. The Comebacker adds to a vibrant late-career phase, balancing blockbuster roles with smaller, more thoughtful projects that define his finest performances.

The Comebacker is set to release in cinemas on 30 July, 2027.
