An online virtual youth centre has launched, which will host live and recorded sessions, live chats and online activities for young people across Kirklees.
The project which has been founded by friends Sophie Simpson and Serena Johnson have developed the new digital hub called Youth Central.
They said, “Our vision is for Youth Central to be a digital hub that all young people across Kirklees can access everything they need in one place, whether that be support, opportunities, resources and entertainment.”
Youth Central, the new online platform, is available for local young people aged 12-19. It is designed for them to have instant access to a range of activities, support and opportunities at the click of a button.
Sessions such as fitness, beauty, self-care, gaming and arts and craft will run Monday- Friday, hosted by youth workers from across Kirklees.
Some sessions will be ‘live’ over Zoom, giving young people the opportunity to interact ‘face-to-face’ with youth workers, other sessions will be available pre-recorded to access at their convenience.
All activities are designed to be fun and engaging, with young people being instrumental in the development of the platform.
Being a teenager during Covid can be a stressful and lonely time, Youth Central is a way for young people to stay connected and build their own sense of community in a supportive environment.
The live chat service, ‘Speak to a Youth Worker’ will give young people daily access to trained youth workers who will listen, signpost and offer ideas for things to do.
Sophie and Serena said, “We are yet to see the real impact of Covid 19 on young people, a fall in the economy will see an increase in youth unemployment and mental health issues.”
“Youth Central is about putting young people first and ensuring that they still feel important amongst the chaos. We hope the platform gives them hope and a sense of community during these uncertain times”
With the current restrictions in place youth work must find new ways to be more innovative and effective.
Youth Central will help to break down a huge barrier during this difficult time by providing many organisations with a platform to effectively support young people across Kirklees.
