Ryan Gosling is reportedly in discussions to join Shawn Levy’s upcoming Star Wars movie, set for release on 17 December, 2027. Levy, along with co-writer Jonathan Tropper, has been developing the project for two years. While details remain scarce, it is understood that the film will not be connected to the core Star Wars saga (Episodes I-IX) and will instead be a standalone story.
The untitled Star Wars film has created significant buzz, especially after Levy’s track record with Disney, most notably delivering Deadpool & Wolverine, the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, which earned $1.33 billion worldwide (approx. £1.06 billion). Gosling’s involvement in the project would add to the film’s already high expectations. The Barbie star recently helped deliver Warner Bros.’ highest-grossing movie ever with a whopping $1.44 billion worldwide (approx. £1.13 billion).
This film is expected to go into production in the fall, and with the upcoming Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, more details are anticipated to emerge. Gosling’s involvement would undoubtedly make this Star Wars entry one to watch, especially with his three Oscar nominations under his belt for Barbie, La La Land, and Half Nelson.
In contrast to past Star Wars experiments with standalone films, such as Solo: A Star Wars Story, which underperformed, Disney has shifted its focus to streaming series like Obi-Wan Kenobi and The Book of Boba Fett. The success of these series has paved the way for deeper explorations of the Star Wars universe on platforms like Disney+, and the studio is now taking another big risk with this standalone movie.
