Matthew McConaughey returns to the screen, swollen eye and all, for The Rivals of Amziah King

After a six-year hiatus from the big screen, Matthew McConaughey is back-though his first day on set was anything but smooth sailing. The Interstellar star admitted to feeling rusty as he stepped onto the set of The Rivals of Amziah King, his right eye swollen shut from a bee sting.

Despite the mishap, McConaughey brought his signature charm to break the tension. Raising his hand in front of the cast and crew, he asked:

“Is anybody else nervous except for me?”

A wave of laughter spread across the set. He then flashed his famous grin and, in a drawl as smooth as ever, added:

“Alright, alright, alright. I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t the only one.”

But underneath the humour, the Oscar-winning actor was being sincere. Having stepped away from Hollywood to write his memoir (Greenlights), voice animated characters (Sing 2), and spend time with family, McConaughey admitted that getting back into the groove of acting felt different.

“I needed to write my own story, direct my own story on the page,” he reflected.

It wasn’t until Andrew Patterson’s script landed in his hands that McConaughey felt the urge to return. Playing Amziah King, the enigmatic owner of a honey operation in Oklahoma, he was drawn to the character’s mystique, grit, and deep connection to his land.

“It’s not where I grew up, but I know these kinds of people,” McConaughey shared. “They know the Constitution, they know the rules they live by, and they’re not looking for or getting approval from the rest of the world. I understand them.”

Patterson, who had spent years shaping the story-at one point expanding it into a seven-episode mini-series before refining it back into a film-knew McConaughey was the perfect choice. He envisioned Amziah King as a free-spirited leader, followed by a ragtag band of beekeepers and musicians who trailed him like a caravan of apostles.

“McConaughey has this free-wheeling charm that was essential for Amziah,” the director noted.

The Rivals of Amziah King had it’s world premiere at the 2025 South by Southwest Film & TV Festival on 10 March
