In a landmark moment for Indian cinema, Shah Rukh Khan, often hailed as the King of Bollywood, has finally been recognised with the National Award for Best Actor, more than three decades after making his debut. The accolade comes for his powerful and layered performance in Jawan, a film that blends high-octane action with sharp social commentary.
Sharing the prestigious title with Khan is Vikrant Massey, whose restrained and deeply moving portrayal in 12th Fail earned him equal honours — a rare joint win that celebrates both mainstream magnetism and quiet resilience on screen.
Rani Mukerji was awarded Best Actress for her stirring performance in Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway, a film that captured the anguish of a mother caught in a legal and cultural battle abroad, earning critical acclaim and public empathy alike.
Shah Rukh Khan, visibly moved by the recognition, shared a heartfelt video on social media:
“I’m overwhelmed with gratitude, pride and humility. To be honoured with the National Award is a moment I will cherish for a lifetime. Thank you to the jury, the chairman, and the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting for deeming me worthy of this recognition. My deepest thanks to all the directors and writers I’ve worked with — especially Raju sir, Saeed, and Atlee sir, who believed in me for Jawan. This belongs to the entire team.”
Khan’s win represents more than just personal achievement — it marks a moment of cinematic vindication for an actor who has defined and redefined Indian popular cinema across generations.
About the National Film Awards
The National Film Awards are among the most prestigious honours in Indian cinema. Instituted by the Government of India, they celebrate excellence in filmmaking across languages, regions and genres. Unlike other film awards in the country, they are renowned for their unbiased and merit-based selection process.
Films certified by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) between 1 January and 31 December of the preceding year are eligible for consideration. The winners are selected by an independent jury appointed by the Directorate of Film Festivals, and the awards are presented by the President of India.
Winning a National Film Award is widely considered one of the highest forms of recognition for any filmmaker or actor, a mark of both artistic integrity and national significance.
As the 71st edition of the awards unfolds, it is clear the honours reflect a maturing film industry, one that rewards not just popularity, but purpose. And in that landscape, Shah Rukh Khan’s long-awaited win feels not only deserved, but historic.
