Usain Bolt excellently responded to critics of his form with a backs to the wall win over arch rival Justin Gatlin in 100m world championship final at the Birds Nest Stadium . Bolt who was the defending champion going into this race, has been in disappointing form this year and has only gone below 10 secs twice .
Here in the final though however although not at his fluent best, Bolt still won – but truth be told the Jamaican didn’t have to be. As for Usain’s opponent Justin Gatlin, this defeat sees the 33 year old’s 28 match unbeaten run come to an end.
Many pundits and analysts argued that Gatlin against better sprinters would come up short – and so it proved here. Gatlin who has served two separate bans for doping offences came into this final as the fastest man in the world this year, so the American would have been in confident mood.
The American excelled in the heats as the rest of the field were blown away. In contrast Gatlin’s rival Usain Bolt only just squeezed into todays final after slipping during the semi-final heat, thankfully if you’re a fan of Usain Bolt he managed to make the final by the skin of his teeth.
In a match that was billed as good against evil due to how both men have faired with doping charges ( Usain Bolt is drug free and never been involved with drugs where as Justin Gatlin has served bans for doping) , it was the defending champion Bolt who looked relaxed as the sprinters crossed the line.
This was first the race in some time where the normally relaxed Gatlin actually tightened up. Write Usain Bolt off at your peril – but you will do so at your own risk. Usain Bolt’s third world title sees him with the same amount of titles as the great American Maurice Green.
