Lucy Liu, the 56-year-old actress known for her action-packed roles in Kill Bill and Charlie’s Angels, has opened up about landing her first dramatic leading role in the movie Rosemead, despite decades of work in Hollywood, according to People.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Liu revealed that she had to wait over 30 years to get a leading role that challenges her and taps into her potential. “I started doing indies, and I was lucky enough to fall into the commercial world, but those are kind of more side-salad roles,” she said.
Rosemead, directed by Eric Lin, is based on a true story and features Liu as Irene, a Chinese immigrant struggling with her son’s schizophrenia diagnosis. The film has earned multiple festival awards since its premiere at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival.
Liu spoke candidly about the biases she has faced in Hollywood, including being typecast in stereotypical roles.
“I feel like it’s always been in there,” Liu said of her performance, which has earned multiple festival awards since Rosemead’s 2025 Tribeca Film Festival premiere. “I just haven’t had any opportunities to tap into it. I mean, to think that I’ve been in this business for over 30 years and now have the first leading role like this is kind of crazy. I did not know that until somebody pointed it out to the team. I’ve never really looked at myself in that way.”
Liu also recalled the “strange lull” after the success of her action movies and her award-winning run on the series Ally McBeal, as reported by People.
“I remember being like, ‘Why isn’t there more happening?'” she said. “I didn’t want to participate in anything where I felt like they weren’t even taking me seriously. How am I being given these offers that are less than when I started in this business? It was a sign of disrespect to me, and I didn’t really want that. I didn’t want to acquiesce to that.”
She continued, “I haven’t gone out and changed my face; there’s only so much I can do. I cannot turn myself into somebody who looks Caucasian, but if I could, I would’ve had so many more opportunities,” as quoted by People.
Rosemead is set to release in cinemas on 5 December, along with a re-release of Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair. Liu will next be seen in The Devil Wears Prada 2, releasing on 1 May, 2026.
Couple Varun Badola and Rajeshwari Sachdev are coming together in a new family drama CO-ED.
Couple Varun Badola and Rajeshwari Sachdev are coming together in a new family drama CO-ED. Vedant Sinha, and Adrija Sinha will also be seen in the show.
On Tuesday, the comedy, family drama trailer was unveiled: https://www.instagram.com/p/DRMdy_pjHms/?hl=en
Set against the backdrop of an all-boys and all-girls school that merge after decades and what follows is a hilarious comedy of errors as teenage worlds collide, sparking chaos, curiosity, and first crushes.
Sharing his experience working in the show, Varun in a press note said, “CO-ED captures the chaos of teenage life, made even more intense when two sister schools merge and everyone is forced to adapt. What we love is how honestly it shows the parents’ parallel journey. As parents in the story, we relate to that tug-of-war between guiding your kids and letting them grow. The twins react so differently, just like in any middle-class family where emotions, expectations, and social norms collide. CO-ED reminds us that growing up is never just a teen story, it’s something parents live through too.”
Rajeshwari Sachdev added, “CO-ED beautifully captures that confusing, funny, and emotional phase of growing up, not just for the kids, but for the parents too. As a mother in the story, I could relate to the constant push and pull between wanting to protect your children and letting them find their own way. It’s a heartwarming reminder that growing up is a shared journey, for both teens and parents.”
CO-ED will premiere exclusively on Amazon MX Player from 20 November, with Guneet Monga Kapoor as producer.

Actress Sonam Kapoor took to social media to flaunt her “shaadi ready” glow by sharing her two stunning looks.
Taking to her Instagram handle, the ‘Neerja’ star posted a couple of photos in stylish outfits and captioned them, “Shaadi ready… two days and two looks I loved!” In the images, Sonam is seen striking different poses in both traditional and western ensembles. In one photo, she poses alongside her husband, Anand Ahuja, while another shows the actress exuding elegance in a blue saree paired with statement jewellery.
Sonam Kapoor often shares her photos on social media and also gives glimpses of her special family moments. Yesterday, the ‘Khoobsurat’ actress brought the Manipuri weave to the forefront with her stylish new ensemble. The actress opted for an outfit from EAST by Easternlight Zimik, a homegrown label from Manipur’s Ukhrul district. She paired a wrap-style outer layer with a black collared shirt and a coordinating skirt, also known as a kashan.
On the work front, Sonam last appeared on screen in the 2023 film “Blind,” a crime thriller directed by Shome Makhija. The movie also featured Purab Kohli, Vinay Pathak, and Lillete Dubey in key supporting roles. A remake of the 2011 Korean original, “Blind” followed the journey of a visually impaired police officer determined to track down a serial killer.
The film marked her return to acting after taking time away from the spotlight to focus on motherhood and family life following the birth of her son. Sonam welcomed her first child, son Vayu, on 20 August, 2022.
Sonam Kapoor was lined up to headline the film adaptation of Anuja Chauhan’s novel “Battle for Bittora,” but the project has remained stalled for years. Produced by her sister Rhea Kapoor, the film was envisioned as a blend of romance and politics, with Sonam playing an aspiring politician opposite Fawad Khan.
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I went to watch The Voice of Hind Rajab on the opening night of the London Palestine Film Festival. Part of that was because I knew Hind’s tragic story so well, and, like many people, I had heard clips of the desperate voice of a frightened little girl, on my social media many times over the last year or so. However, my own familiarity hadn’t prepared me for the emotional intensity of Ben Hania’s docudrama.
From its opening moments, the film pulls you into an atmosphere of relentless urgency. Ben Hania centres us in the Palestine Red Crescent emergency co-ordination centre in Ramallah, 52 miles away from Gaza, where responders are trying to rescue a six-year-old girl trapped in a car next to the murdered, dead, bleeding bodies of her family members. The ambulance is just eight minutes away from her location in northern Gaza, yet Mahdi, the coordinator, refuses to send it. His colleagues challenge him, plead with him, and even shout at him in anger. Sitting in the audience, I felt those emotions too: the confusion and the instinctive outrage.

Whether deliberate or not, these early scenes allow us to inhabit that same emotional gridlock that the volunteers themselves were trapped in. For long stretches, you are left to sit in the rising frustration of not understanding why he didn’t just send the ambulance. It’s only later that the truth slowly, painfully, clicks into place that without a confirmed safe route (a Green Light) obtained via a lengthy and complex chain of facilitators and organisations between the Red Crescent and Israel’s Ministry of Defence, any ambulance that attends risks being targeted and those inside it, killed.
What makes the film painfully unbearable at times is Hind’s voice, no matter how much I had braced myself to hear it. Ben Hania uses Hind’s actual emergency calls from that day in January 2024, her voice confused, vulnerable, and begging for someone to come and save her, and holds it at the centre of the film. Hearing her say she is scared, that it’s getting dark, that she can hear the tanks getting closer, you want so desperately to pick her up and take her far away, somewhere safe, somewhere without bullets and tanks and soldiers.
Even though you know the outcome, the film tricks your heart into hoping that she might be saved. It is a cruel, impossible hope, but it draws you deeper into the hope that the responders perhaps had that day; that maybe her fate would allow this little girl to be saved.
The emotional velocity of the actors’ performances is startling; Omar (Motaz Malhees), desperately trying to convince Mahdi to send the ambulance, angry, frustrated, keeping a running score on how many minutes have passed since Hind’s call, and his supervisor, Rana (Saja Kilani), swallowing her tears as she keeps Hind talking, and is both strong and resolute and vulnerable and fragile at the same time. And finally, Mahdi (Amer Hlehel), who must bear the crushing weight of responsibility in a system that requires permission before compassion. Where lives matter less than protocol. A protocol that relies on the cooperation of the very same army responsible for shooting at the car with Hind’s family inside.

As I watched, I wondered, how has the world become almost immune to the acute suffering that we see daily as we scroll through on social media? How have we become accustomed to seeing the dismembered limbs of children? Of skeletal bodies due to forced starvation? Of homes, schools, hospitals, and lives turned to rubble?
The emotional crescendo comes in the closing section when Ben Hania shifts from drama to documentary. Seeing Hind’s mother speak, the pain in her heart so visible on her face, seeing home footage of Hind playing on the beach; those scenes are the ones that make the audience’s tears come audibly, even sitting amongst strangers in the cinema. Suddenly, she is no longer a voice through a phone line. She is a child with a laugh, a face, a family, a life. And that is when the real pain of the loss finally settles over you, heavy and inescapable.
While the film follows the desperate efforts to save a child, it is hard to forget the political forces that create such systems of cruelty where a little girl is left to bleed out for hours, alone and frightened. It is not an easy watch, but it is necessary. At its heart is Hind’s voice, so tragically silenced that day, but which cannot be ignored, it cannot be erased, and it demands that we bear witness.
The London Palestine Film Festival runs until 28 November at the Barbican Centre, London. Full listings can be found here: https://www.palestinefilm.org.uk/

Pakistani actors Bilal Ashraf (Janaan, Superstar) and Maya Ali (Teefa in Trouble, Mann Mayal, Diyar-e-Dil) are set to share the screen once again in Khan Tumhara, a new film expected to inject fresh energy and innovation into Pakistani cinema. The highly anticipated teaser has now been released, offering a first glimpse into what promises to be a powerful blend of action, romance and emotional depth.
Directed by Ehteshamuddin (Superstar, Udaari, Sadqay Tumhare) and written by Mustafa Afridi, the film is produced by Momina Duraid (Parwaaz Hai Junoon, Superstar, Sadqay Tumhare) at MD Productions, alongside Bilal Ashraf and Ehteshamuddin under Behive Transmedia.
At the heart of the film is Yusuf Khan, portrayed as a complex protagonist caught in a world driven by power, love and vengeance. The production team has emphasised that Khan Tumhara aims to push boundaries within the action genre in Pakistan.
The film was shot using multiple cameras and specialised techniques designed to capture immersive, close-up action. An international action team led by Nick Khan and Hussain Abdullah, known for their work on major titles such as Skyfall and Marvel’s Eternals was brought to Pakistan specifically for the project. Their arrival marked a significant step for the local industry, with the team also providing extensive training to Pakistani crew members to develop a distinctive and uncompromising visual style.
The filming process proved physically demanding for the leading cast. Maya Ali’s determination and hard work were highlighted by the production team, while Bilal Ashraf pushed through multiple injuries to complete his scenes. Notably, no body doubles were used for Ashraf, who performed all of his own stunts across the film’s action sequences. Each scene was crafted with meticulous care, with action sequences alone taking around 70 days to film, described as a first for Pakistani cinema.
Post-production has also played a major role, with Haider and his team at Softmatrix delivering high-level visual effects aimed at matching international standards. The filmmakers state that every frame reflects careful craftsmanship and technical precision.
Director Ehteshamuddin described the project as a bold step forward for Pakistani action cinema, saying the film confronts themes of love, power and vengeance in an unflinching manner. Actor and producer Bilal Ashraf called the experience “a lifetime education in the craft”, dedicating the journey to his late mother and sister. Producer Momina Duraid emphasised the film’s broad appeal, highlighting its mix of action, romance and comedy designed for family audiences. Maya Ali said the film holds a special place in her heart and praised the opportunity to work closely with Ehteshamuddin and Ashraf.
Adding to the anticipation is the film’s multilingual soundtrack, featuring a mix of Urdu, Punjabi and Pushto songs aimed at capturing a wide listener base.
Khan Tumhara is set to bring a new level of cinematic ambition to Pakistani screens and is expected to release on Eid ul Adha.
The makers have released the trailer for ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’, the sequel to the super hit ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’.
The trailer starts out with Mario and Luigi taunting the super-small Bowser, who ate a Mini Mushroom at the end of the first movie and became the plumber brothers’ puny prisoner.
After Bowser paints a romantic portrait of himself and his beloved Peach and gets rejected by Mario, the real action begins.
Mario and Peach see dozens of shooting stars streak across the sky, then head to the stars with Luigi and Toad.
Just like the ‘Super Mario Galaxy’ video game, they travel through different planets, including one made entirely of water and a desert planet with upside-down pyramids (from 2017’s “Super Mario Odyssey”) that Mario and Luigi zoom through on bikes.
The heroes face off against Bowser’s son, Bowser Jr., and also meet the fierce princess Rosalina.
According to Variety, Rosalina is voiced by Brie Larson, and Bowser Jr. is voiced by Benny Safdie.
Just like the 2002 game ‘Super Mario Sunshine,’ Bowser Jr. is armed with a magical paintbrush that he uses to coat himself in metal and launch as a flail.
Meanwhile, Rosalina takes down a spider-like robot all by herself using her magic wand, as shown in the trailer.
Universal Pictures shared the trailer of the picture on their Instagram handle.

The film has been voiced by Chris Pratt (Mario), Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach), Jack Black (Bowser), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad) and Charlie Day (Luigi), who have all returned for the sequel.
“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” is based on the widely popular “Super Mario Galaxy,” released for the Nintendo Wii in 2007, according to Variety.
The game is widely considered not only to be one of the best mainline Mario platformers, but one of the best video games of all time.
While plot details for the movie remain thin, “Super Mario Galaxy” saw the titular plumber traversing the cosmos on a mission to collect enough Power Stars to allow his ship to travel to the centre of the universe, where the evil Bowser has imprisoned Princess Peach.
“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” is set to hit theatres in April 2026.
Released in April 2023, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” was a box office smash. The film went on to gross $1.3 billion worldwide and is currently the fifth-highest-grossing animated movie of all time behind ‘Ne Zha 2,’ ‘Inside Out 2,’ ‘The Lion King’ and ‘Frozen II,’ reported Variety.
