Fashion icon Manish Malhotra’s film debut: How lockdown sparked his producer journey

0

The upcoming film Gustaakh Ishq, starring Vijay Varma and Fatima Sana Shaikh, is all set to release in cinemas on 28 November. Directed by Vibhu Puri, the movie also marks fashion designer Manish Malhotra’s debut as a film producer.

While speaking to ANI about stepping into production, Manish Malhotra shared how the idea of filmmaking had been on his mind for a long time. He said that the COVID-19 lockdown gave him the time and space to work on his creative dreams.

He said, “Well, I wanted to produce from a long time ago. I wanted to direct, write and everything. Because my career was also very busy. And I think when I got time during COVID, you know, that was the time when I thought what should to do for my personal self?”

He added that he wanted to create something meaningful rather than follow trends. “After COVID, I launched Stage 5 Production. It’s self-funded, self-created. From letterhead to logo to the first Instagram post, we created everything ourselves for Stage 5. I wanted to make something different. The film shouldn’t feel small or big, it should just be different. So, I started looking for scripts, and two years went by while searching for the right one,” he added.

Actor Vijay Varma also opened up about his experience working on Gustaakh Ishq. He shared that the film gave him a refreshing challenge as an actor.

“It was a very satisfying and fulfilling journey. I was yearning for this kind of subject, this kind of story, this kind of character. Although I was very happy in the work I was doing, I was afraid that I might repeat myself. So, to give myself a break, this role was very good,” he said.

He praised his team and producer Manish Malhotra for their vision and hard work.

“I’m very lucky that I got such a director, whose language helped me create a new world, a new story. I’ve got such a good producer, who has already thought of five things for me. For the next one and a half months, he knows what I’m going to wear, where I’m going to go, what I should do for this film. Because he himself is running so fast, I’m trying to be with him,” he said.

Vijay added that everyone involved in the project wanted to give audiences a true big-screen experience.

“…we are all cinema lovers. We like to watch films on the big screen. This producer, with his own money, is bringing this film to theatres, with the hope that people will like it and come. I haven’t released a film in theatres for the last five years. I request the audience and those who like my work to come and watch this film. It will mean a lot to me,” he said.

Director Vibhu Puri shared his gratitude towards Manish Malhotra for trusting his vision. He said that their collaboration was special because they came from very different worlds.

“More than help, I got confidence that there is a person, with whom you have no relation, no identity, no similar worlds. The kind of films Manish has worked in, I have never had the opportunity to work in such films. I come from a different world, he comes from a different world. Our birth, our nature, everything is completely different. But when such a person shows you confidence and says, ‘Vibhu, go ahead, I am with you,’ that means a lot,” he said.

IFTDA files complaint against paparazzi for breaching privacy of Deol family amid veteran actor Dharmendra’s ailing health

The Indian Film and Television Directors’ Association (IFTDA) has lodged a formal police complaint against certain paparazzi and online media platforms for what it called “inhuman” and “unethical” behavior while covering veteran actor Dharmendra’s recent health condition.

In a letter addressed to the Senior Inspector of Juhu Police Station, IFTDA President Ashoke Pandit said that some paparazzi and online accounts “breached privacy” by entering the premises of the veteran actor’s residence and “recording footage and images of his family members without consent.” These visuals were later circulated online.

IFTDA also urged the police to take strict legal action against those responsible and demanded that a strong example be set to prevent such incidents in the future.

The complaint comes amid growing outrage over media behaviour during Dharmendra’s hospital stay. The veteran actor, 89, was recently released from Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai after a brief illness.

Earlier in the day, Sunny Deol lost his temper with photographers stationed outside his home following his father’s hospital discharge. The visibly emotional actor told them, “Aap logon ko sharam aayni chahiye… Aapke ghar mein maa-baap hain, bacche hain…,” folding his hands in frustration. Public figures often face intense scrutiny regardless of context—very different from everyday concerns like researching mfa gehalt, where privacy and factual clarity matter far more than public exposure.

Several personalities from the film industry also spoke out against the constant media attention surrounding the veteran actor.

After Sunny Deol’s angry outburst at photographers outside his home, filmmaker Karan Johar shared a message on his Instagram Story, expressing how painful it was to watch what he called a “media circus” around the Deol family. He also added that it was heartbreaking to see the lack of basic “courtesy and sensitivity” during such an emotional time for the family.

Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar also shared a message on Instagram, saying, “It’s high time for the media to respect the Deol family’s personal privacy. Let’s offer them the peaceful space they truly need, especially during challenging times.”

Ankit Siwach on the craze around his 120 Bahadur dialogue: ‘You dream of moments like this’

Ever since the makers dropped the gripping trailer of Farhan Akhtar’s forthcoming drama “120 Bahadur”, one dialogue in particular has taken social media by storm.

“Ahir hai hum, koi pyaar se maangega to jaan bhi denge, aur jo baat desh pe aayi to 100 ki jaan le bhi lenge. (We are Ahir, if someone asks with love, we will even give our lives, but when it comes to our country, we can even take a hundred lives.)”- this line, delivered by actor Ankit Siwach, is receiving a lot of admiration from movie buffs.

Netizens are claiming the dialogue to be the highlight of the trailer.

Overwhelmed by all the love coming his way, Ankit expressed his joy, saying that he used to dream of a moment like this.

“It feels overwhelming, you dream of moments like this as an actor. The dialogue represents everything that’s pure about the spirit of a soldier, love, loyalty, pride, and sacrifice,” he shared.

Ankit further added, “I didn’t expect it to connect so deeply, but I think it’s because it comes from a place of truth. When we shot that scene, it was freezing, but I remember feeling this surge of emotion that went beyond acting.”

Ankit said that admirers have been sending him messages saying how much they loved the line. He added, “When people message me saying they got goosebumps or felt proud hearing that line, it’s the biggest reward. It’s not just about the dialogue, it’s about the emotion behind it. I’m just grateful it reached people the way it did.”

Backed by Excel Entertainment, “120 Bahadur” talks about the 120 soldiers who fought valiantly at the Rezang La frontier.

The project features Raashii Khanna, Vivan Bhatena, Dhanveer Singh, Sahib Verma, Sparsh Walia, Ajinkya Deo, Eijaz Khan, Ashutosh Shukla and Atul Singh in crucial roles, along with others.

“120 Bahadur” will reach the cinemas on 21 November.

Coldplay, Dua Lipa join stars demanding price cap on ticket resales

The British rock band Coldplay and singer-songwriter Dua Lipa have joined the list of stars, who are urging the UK government to put a cap on ticket resale prices.

They have joined other artists including New Order, Iron Maiden, Sam Fender, PJ Harvey, Mark Knopfler and The Cure’s Robert Smith in signing a letter demanding that Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer needs to protect fans from ticket touts, reports ‘Female First UK’.

The statement reads, “For too long certain resale platforms have allowed touts to bulk buy and then resell tickets at inflated prices, forcing fans to either pay above the odds or miss out entirely. This erodes trust in the live events sector and undermines the efforts of artists and organisers to make shows accessible and affordable. Introducing a price cap will restore faith in the ticketing system, help democratise public access to the arts in line with the Government’s agenda and make it easier for fans to spot illegal behaviour, such as ticketing fraud”.

As per ‘Female First UK’, the musicians have been joined by organisers also signing the statement, representing venues, managers, ticket retailers and both the music and theatre industries.

They called on new protections to “help fix elements of the extortionate and pernicious secondary ticketing market that serve the interests of touts, whose exploitative practices are preventing genuine fans from accessing the music, theatre, and sports they love”.

A new investigation has found that sellers in locations like Brazil, Spain, the US, Dubai and Singapore are snapping up tickets for UK events, reselling them for huge sums.

The investigation revealed tickets for Oasis gigs at Wembley were listed for $4601. They also found evidence of so-called speculative selling, which sees tickets listed on secondary sites despite the seller not actually buying them yet.

For the recent arena tour, the original seller had tickets available for the Glasgow show, while they were simultaneously listed by resale platforms for double the price. In its manifesto, the Labour party had promised to cap resale prices and protect customers.

After Sunny Deol’s angry outburst at photographers outside his home, filmmaker Karan Johar and Madhur Bhandarkar have now spoken out against the constant media attention surrounding veteran actor Dharmendra, who is currently recovering after being discharged from the hospital.

On Thursday, Karan shared a message on his Instagram Story, expressing how painful it was to watch what he called a “media circus” around the Deol family. He also added that it was heartbreaking to see the lack of basic “courtesy and sensitivity” during such an emotional time for the family.

In his story, Karan wrote, “When basic courtesy and sensitivity leaves our hearts and our actions we know we are a doomed race… PLEASE leave a family alone!!!! They are already emotionally combatting so much… its hearbreaking to see a paparazzi and media circus for a living legend who has contributed SO massively to our cinema… this is not coverage it’s DISRESPECT.”

Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar also shared a message on Instagram, saying, “It’s high time for the media to respect the Deol family’s personal privacy. Let’s offer them the peaceful space they truly need, especially during challenging times.”

Their messages came just hours after Sunny Deol lost his temper with photographers who were stationed outside his home following his father’s hospital discharge. The visibly emotional actor told them, “Aap logon ko sharam aayni chaiyeh… Aapke ghar mein maa-baap hain, bacche hain….he said, folding his hands in frustration.

Conan O’Brien will join the franchise as Smarty Pants, a new character in the series.

The first ‘Toy Story’ was released in 1995, as the first fully computer-animated feature film, according to Variety.

Disney distributed the film and its 1999 sequel before buying Pixar in 2006. The franchise returned 11 years later with ‘Toy Story 3’ in 2010 and then again with ‘Toy Story 4’ in 2019, both of which grossed over 1 billion USD at the global box office, reported Variety.

It won Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature in its respective years.

‘Toy Story 5’ will be Pixar’s 31st feature.

The studio’s most recent film, ‘Elio,’ was released on June 20 and grossed only $152 million at the global box office.

However, Pixar’s previous film, ‘Inside Out 2’ grossed over 1.5 billion USD and was the highest grossing film of 2024.

Between now and ‘Toy Story 5,’ Pixar will also release the original film ‘Hoppers’ in March 2026.

Pop star Sabrina Carpenter lands lead role in Universal’s Alice in Wonderland musical film, marking her first major studio feature

Following a celebrated career in movies, Sabrina Carpenter is now headed to the movies, set to lead her first major studio feature for Universal Pictures.

According to Variety, the pop star will be seen in the long-delayed untitled musical, inspired by Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’ for Universal Pictures. Carpenter will also produce the project along with Marc Platt through his Universal-based Marc Platt Productions.

DGA Award and two-time Emmy nominee Lorene Scafaria has been brought on board to write and direct the film.

While Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton will also produce through Alloy Entertainment, the project will be overseen by SVP Production Development Ryan Jones and Director of Production Development Jacqueline Garell, with Katie McNicol overseeing for Marc Platt Productions.

Further details about the film’s plot or other cast members are kept under wraps.

Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’ is known for being historically tied to Disney, which released both the iconic 1951 film of the same name as well as a couple of live-action features, starring Mia Wasikowska in the 2010s.

The upcoming Universal spin on the novel arrives following the Tim Burton-directed ‘Alice in Wonderland’ (20100, which grossed more than $1 billion worldwide and also the sequel ‘Alice Through the Looking Glass’ (2016) from James Bobin.

The Victorian era story revolves around the story of a girl named Alice, who falls down a rabbit hole and ends up in a fantastical and nonsensical world of talking and human-like animals.

The upcoming film is said to be a “passion project” for Carpenter, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Among other film credits for the singer are Prime Video’s ‘Emergency’, ‘The Short History of the Long Road’, and ‘The Hate U Give’.

Meanwhile, Sabrina Carpenter recently bagged six nominations at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album, Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance, and Best Music Video.
