Is gym wear the new jeans?

It seems like everyone has been swapping jeans for gym wear recently.

Gone are the days when you would be struggling to find a cute top to match your newly purchased ripped/high-waisted/skinny jeans.  With the New Year commencing everyone seems to be obsessing about getting into shape and looking fashionable whilst doing so.

Many of you have already sworn by how 2015 heralds a new year of fitness. And what better way to kick-start your new regime than with a new revamped wardrobe of gym attire, to keep you dedicated and motivated to your promise. Once-popular shell suits and leg warmers are thankfully a thing of the past. Even baggy tees and old leggings have even been pushed aside because quite simply, they are just not good enough to sweat in anymore.

Sportswear in general is becoming rather more stylish in its own right (even outside the gym). It’s all thanks to high-street stores wanting a piece of the action, that there’s now no need to spend an arm and a leg. Adidas and Nike can move over because there are new alternatives in town.

Whereas workout clothes once relegated to the back of the closet, they are rapidly moving to the front of the fashion scene. In 2014, we saw Alexander Wang’s collection for H&M take the country by storm. It was a collection which optimised sports chic and was sold out within a matter of hours.

But why is it that this casual clothing trend is popping up everywhere we turn?

Well  not  long ago, it was considered quite a faux pas to be seen running around town in your workout pants and trainers—unless, of course, you lived somewhere like LA or Miami, where it’s always been acceptable to flaunt that beach-ready body all the time. But with sporting apparel being everything from comfortable, affordable, versatile and stylish, active wear is no longer just for the gym. So it’s no surprise that everyone is bringing out new ranges of luxe hoodies, stretch pants etc to not only makes us look good but feel good whilst on the move.

This so-called fashion style is all thanks to the Americans who push to live a more active lifestyle, and we being the sheepish individuals we are, we have decided to copy.

It’s also down to the likes of Topshop who recently announced that they are embarking on a joint venture with Beyonce to create a “global athletic streetwear brand” this Autumn. Rihanna even managed to bag herself a deal with Puma, so it’s no wonder when global pop stars like these bring out their ranges that we want to be part of it too. It gives us the impression that if we wear these clothes we feel equally as fit as the ladies promoting them.

Mainstream designers like Stella McCartney and Alexander Wang jumped onto this fitness chic bandwagon, introducing clothing lines with everything from costly leggings to $100+ zip-front hoodies. With so many people interested in fitness right now who can blame them for equipping us with the best of the best.

With fashion houses being a little out of our price range, nationwide retailers like New Look, Primark and Victoria Secret have all got in on the action too. Designs include details of lace and mesh panelling making it somewhat preferable choice to that one pair of trusty black leggings you’d always be sporting. Even online retailers (popular for their “stylish” clothes) are not ones to fall behind as Missguided Active and boohooFIT have introduced their new chic collection for 2015.

“It’s great that everyone is introducing new collections and that fitness is taking over the fashion world. I like that it has become almost cooler to be comfortable and athletic than to be overly glamorous,” said Laurie Malone a gym enthusiast from Bradford.

With only a month into the new year, we have already seen how people have swapped blouses for fitted vests, heels for sneakers and cardigans for hoodies. There was a time when you would be embarrassed to step out and be seen in this gear, but no one seems to bat an eye lid anymore. Who knew that yoga pants and neon sports bras would become the ‘it’ fashion staple.

Anastasia Wilson, a 27 year old assistant, says- “I actually prefer shopping for workout gear than jeans and dresses. It’s much more comfy and stylish. There is so much to choose from- everything from sports bras, to trainers to choosing matching socks. I don’t know how I survived wearing jeans everyday. This trend is definitely going to take off this year thanks to fitness fanatics. Who knows, soon enough we might be going to work in tank tops and joggers.”

Women are spending hundreds of pounds on athletic clothing with the intention of not actually having to workout. In our heads, we have latched onto the idea that if you wear workout clothes (like half of these celebrities posing on Instagram) then you are more obliged to work out. You feel a lot more attractive knowing that you have the intentions of living a healthier lifestyle and wanting people to know that you are trying to become fit.

As we have become a generation that is always ‘on-the-go’, fashion houses have had to adapt to our lifestyle. It is for that reason that these clothes supposedly give us more function without compromising style.

Ladies, it’s about time you shift those jeans aside as it is obvious to see that gym clothes have become the new uniform of 2015. Note that if you deem yourself as a gym junkie or not, you’ll be dressing like one soon enough.

Bradford Libraries is bringing stories to life with storytime sessions across the district over the February half term.

Bradford Libraries is offering 23 free Count Me In number sack storytime sessions from, 12-25 February.

Library staff are using storysacks to help engage children and their parents in the world of book sharing.

downloadUsing props and role play will add a new dimension to story time and allow children to see books in a whole different light with visual aides that they can touch and feel.

The Count Me In sacks have a focus on numbers and will be available to borrow from libraries on an adult ticket. The sacks have three different learning levels. People can call their local library for details.

Macbeth with a blend of Indian hungama

0

Macbeth is the first production from Black Theatre Live, a pioneering consortium of 8 regional theatres committed to increasing the amount of Black and Ethnic Minority theatre on the touring circuit.

Spun together with a blend of Indian music and movement, this brand new production from one of the UK’s leading cross-cultural theatre companies sees Shakespeare’s tragedy reimagined in a contemporary context, as a brew of treachery and ambition sets an Asian family on a road to destruction.

The production sees the engineers of Macbeth’s downfall depicted as three Hijras. A strand of Indian society little-known in the west, Hijras are a centuries-old “third gender” community (including transsexuals, transgender people, eunuchs and cross-dressers).

Tara Arts Artistic Director Jatinder Verma, who will direct Macbeth said “Spirits in Indian traditions combine vivacity with viciousness. By casting the Witches in Macbeth as provocative Bollywood queens, I aim to explore the dangerously vain ambition driving Macbeth.”

With over 35 years of experience, Tara Arts are established as one of the UK’s foremost creators of cross-cultural theatre. Their work, which consists of both new writing and reimagined classics, seeks to make imaginative connections across communities, to help foster a global sensibility from their own locality.  The company was founded in 1977 by Artistic Director Jatinder Verma, along with Sunil Saggar, Ovais Kadri, Praveen Bahl & Vijay Shaunak.

Through a 3-year programme, Black Theatre Live will bring high quality performances from culturally diverse perspectives to mid-scale venues across the country.  The initiative is a partnership of Tara Arts, Derby Theatre, Queens Hall (Hexham), the Lighthouse (Poole), Theatre Royal Bury St. Edmunds, Theatre Royal Margate, Stratford Circus (London) & Key Theatre (Peterborough).

The cast currently confirmed for Macbeth includes Robert Mountford, previously seen in Tara Arts co-production with the National Theatre The Black Album. He has also performed for Tara in productions of The Merchant of Venice and The Tempest. Robert’s other credits include Much Ado About Nothing for the Royal Shakespeare Company and Silent Witness for the BBC. He will be joined by Shaheen Khan, whose credits include Rafta Rafta at the National Theatre and the film Bend it Like Beckham.

‘Digni-Tea’ time

0

People took some time out for ‘Digni-Tea’ at a special event last week at Bradford’s City Hall.

The event, hosted by Bradford Council marked Dignity Action Day, a national annual day (on 1 February) for health and social care organisations, their staff and members of the public to highlight the importance of upholding people’s rights to dignity. The day aims to ensure that people who use health and care services are treated as individuals, given choice, control and a sense of purpose in their daily lives.

big_news_Dignity_Action_Day_flyer_2013The theme of this year’s event was ‘Have you got time for Digni-Tea?’ It brought together members of the public, and a range of local organisations including Bradford Older People’s Alliance, the Alzheimer’s Society along with the Council’s Adult and Community Services. The focus was on how Dignity in Care is a part of the every day work of health and care services across Bradford district.

The Champions Show the Way Choir performed a medley of songs including: ‘When I’m 64,’ ‘Raindrops’, ‘Ma’, he’s Making Eyes at me’ and a specially re-worked version of ‘My Favourite Things’ from the Sound of Music.

16 characters will feature in the new experience, which will bring to life 11 scenes from the first six Star Wars films covering a galaxy of locations, including the swamps of Dagobah, Jabba’s Throne Room and the flight deck of the Millennium Falcon. Fans can wield a lightsaber with Anakin Skywalker; feel the Force alongside Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn when they take on Darth Maul on Naboo; join the captive Princess Leia and the evil Jabba the Hutt in his Throne Room; hang out with Han Solo in the legendary cantina bar before stepping onto the Millennium Falcon with the Wookiee warrior, Chewbacca; and witness the ultimate battle as father and son, Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader, embark on their final duel.

“Star Wars at Madame Tussauds takes the Madame Tussauds experience up a notch, as guests will not just be able to get close to their film heroes, they will be able to star alongside them and grab a selfie in specially recreated scenes of some of their favourite movie moments,” commented Madame Tussauds London’s General Manager, Ben Sweet. He continued: “We’re working very closely with Disney and Lucasfilm to ensure 100 per cent authenticity and our team has had exclusive access to props, costumes, designs and even had a ‘sitting’ with one of the original Yoda models at Skywalker Ranch in California. Yoda’s wax figure is now complete and the results are astonishing.

Guests will become truly immersed in the films in a new and exciting way. We hope to delight fans and give them a unique way to celebrate the Star Wars story.”

Star Wars at Madame Tussauds represents a significant new expansion for Madame Tussauds London, opening up an entire new area across two floors of the iconic Baker Street site to provide a spectacular finale to the current visit. The space has been designed for further expansion and additional content for new figures and scenes to be added in the future.

The experience is due to open in mid-May this year and fans can sign up at www.madametussauds.com/london to be the first to know when tickets go on sale, plus find all the latest news and updates.

A similar, but smaller-scale experience will also open at Madame Tussauds Berlin in May featuring some of the same Star Wars characters, but in different specially recreated scenes.

Bringing life back into Little Germany, Bradford

0

Bradford Council’s Executive is being asked to approve proposed changes to planning rules to breathe new life back into a historic section of the city.

Planning officers have been working with English Heritage and the local group Little Germany Action to introduce a new way of simplifying planning rules to reduce bureaucracy and cut costs.

MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERABradford Council is planning to introduce a Local Development Order (LDO) and a Local Listed Building Consent Order (LLBCO) into Little Germany and the Cathedral Area.

Reports to the Executive, which meets on Tuesday, 10 February, at City Hall, says the orders will apply to specific buildings within Little Germany and the Cathedral Precinct Conservation Area.

Councillors will be asked to give permission for a consultation with building owners and other stakeholders about bringing in the orders.

Little Germany developed as a textile merchants’ warehouse and office quarter in the second half of the 19th century and contains many Listed buildings of historic and architectural importance.

While listed status protects the buildings from inappropriate development it can deter new businesses from investing in them because of the perceived difficulty of getting Listed Building and planning consent to alter the inside spaces to their needs.

Many of the buildings at the moment are vacant and under occupied which leaves them vulnerable to deterioration.

The introduction of LDOs and LLBCOs is designed to overcome that problem, simplifying the planning process to allow alterations to be made while still protecting their special interest.

The LDO and LLBCO will remove practical and perceived obstructions to appropriate redevelopment, by granting prior consent for specific alterations and uses such as residential, leisure, office and retail.

This will allow investment while keeping within of the rules of Listed status as overseen by English Heritage and Bradford Council.

Coun Val Slater, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Housing Planning and Transport, said: “The regeneration of the city centre is vital to the city’s economic success in the future and this area can make a very important contribution to that regeneration.

“The planning consents granted under these orders will be strictly limited to work necessary to convert and re-use the buildings without harming the outstanding architectural appearance of Little Germany as a
whole.” Tammy Whitaker, Yorkshire Planning and Conservation Director for English Heritage, said: “Bradford Council is paving the way for these constructive changes to the listed building consent system, which will simplify life for developers whilst allowing the wonderful historic buildings in Little Germany to be reused and enjoyed.

“We have been working closely with the council, consultants and owners to deliver training on the changes and are excited that this could mean regeneration and a new lease of life to such an important area of Bradford.”

Act FAST if you experience stroke symptoms

0

Public Health England is today launching the annual ‘Act FAST’ campaign, which highlights the common symptoms of stroke and mini strokes and encourages people to call 999 if they notice the symptoms in others or experience them themselves.

The campaign specifically targets South Asians as it is crucially important that these groups know the symptoms of stroke and mini strokes as their risk is around double the general population in the UK.

Professor Kevin Fenton, Director of Health and Wellbeing at Public Health England said “The impressive results from previous Act FAST campaigns show just how important it is that we continue to raise awareness of the symptoms of stroke especially amongst high risk ethnic groups like South Asians where there is a higher prevalence of high blood pressure and diabetes which are significant risk factors that cause strokes.”

“Highlighting the importance of treating mini strokes with the same urgency as strokes can also make a huge difference – around 10,000 strokes could be prevented annually if mini strokes were treated in time. That’s why the Act FAST campaign encourages people experiencing stroke-like symptoms to call 999.”

A mini stroke has similar symptoms to a full stroke, except that these symptoms last for a much shorter amount of time. Without immediate treatment, around one in five of those who experience a mini stroke will go on to have a full stroke within a few days.

Early intervention following a mini stroke can greatly reduce the risk of having another stroke.

However, while 59% of people surveyed cite stroke as one of the top three conditions they are concerned about behind cancer, new research reveals today that less than half (45%) would call 999 if they experienced the symptoms of a mini stroke.

downloadSanjeev Bhasker, comedian, actor and campaign supporter said “Family is a really important part of my life, and when a family member has a stroke, it can be devastating for the patient and the rest of the family. As a community we have a higher risk of stroke than the general population so knowing the signs to look out for is crucial for us. If you or a family member experiences any of the symptoms of a mini-stroke or stroke, please call 999, take immediate action – don’t put it off till tomorrow – it could save a loved one’s life.”

Since the Act FAST campaign launched in 2009, an additional 38,600 people have got to hospital within the vital three-hour window meaning that stroke sufferers receive the immediate medical treatment required. This not only results in a greater chance of better recovery, but since the campaign launch over 4,000 fewer people have become disabled as a result of a stroke.

The campaign urges people to Act FAST if they notice any of the following symptoms, even if they disappear within a short space of time:

  • Face – has their face fallen on one side? Can they smile?
  • Arms – can they raise both their arms and keep them there?
  • Speech – is their speech slurred? If they notice any of these symptoms it is
  • Time – time to call 999 if you see any single one of these signs.

Dr Pankaj Sharma, Consultant Neurologist at Imperial College London & Hammersmith Hospitals said “We know that sadly, far too many people dismiss their early warning signs of stroke and delay calling 999. Stroke is a medical emergency and getting the right treatment fast can save lives.

“Through this latest campaign we hope as many people as possible know how to act FAST and help reduce the devastating impact a stroke can have.”

Bhasker Patel, Emmerdale actor and campaign supporter said “I can’t stress how important your health is as you get older. As someone who is at higher risk of having a stroke because of my ethnicity, age and gender, I can only stress that if you have any of the symptoms, please don’t let male pride or fear get in the way of getting help. Mini-strokes are a warning of what may be around the corner – don’t ignore the symptoms. Call 999 – acting fast could save your life!”
