Rani Mukerji Wins Hearts At Mardaani Premiere in Poland

0

Yash Raj Films ‘Mardaani’ premiered in Poland at Warsaw’s Kino Muranow theatre, one of the oldest art house theatres in the country, yesterday. Rani Mukerji, who arrived for a full day of extensive press followed by the premiere, left winning over the hearts of the press and fans alike.

Mardaani Poland 1The film received a standing ovation from the audience and Rani Mukerji was congratulated by one and all for her exceptional performance and for being a part of such a relevant and sensitive film. What was really special was the presence of the extremely reticent Polish DoP, Artur Zurawski, who had worked on the film and finally watched it with his family at the premiere. Championing the war against the evil of society in the form of child trafficking, Rani Mukerji shared her anguish of learning so much during her research of what goes on in this dark and dangerous world and her preparation for yet another performance that was such a departure for her as an actor.

The audience, which consisted of 90 per cent Polish natives, was both pleased and surprised at how Indian cinema was evolving and now telling stories that are more than just escapism and spoke a more International cinematic language. During the Q&A after the screening, the audience put some very interesting and varied questions to both the actress and the DoP, but there were some who simply wanted to say “Thank You” for making a brave film.

Mardaani Poland 2Rani Mukerji, who is currently still in Poland said “It was a very special day as Mardaani released in Poland today. The response to the film by the Polish people made the evening even more special and it reiterates the fact that a good film finds an audience irrespective of the language in any part of the world as art doesn’t have borders or barriers. I will cherish forever the love and adulation I received today from Poland.”

The film’s premiere in Poland is a trendsetting event – it makes Rani Mukerji the first Indian actor to visit the country to premiere a Hindi film. Mardaani goes on a platform release in the country from Friday 30th January.

Directed by Pradeep Sarkar, the film was critically acclaimed and loved by audiences when it released worldwide in August last year, with many calling Mardaani Rani Mukerji’s career-best performance.

Two Men Arrested After ‘Chop Shop’ Discovered

Police arrested two men on suspicion of burglary after receiving a report of a garage being used as a ‘chop shop’ in Bradford.

Officers attended the garage in Ing Street at about 9pm on Tuesday, 27 January, and found four vehicles at the location.

Two of the vehicles, an Audi A6 and VW Golf, were believed to have been stolen from Bradford.

Police also recovered a Range Rover, believed to have been stolen from Wakefield, and a Mazda Two, thought to have been stolen from Sheffield.

The vehicles are thought to have been taken in Hanoi-style burglaries, where offenders break into properties to steal the keys before taking the vehicles.

Two men, aged 24 and 25, were arrested and later released on bail pending further enquiries.

Detective Sergeant Colman Coyne, of Bradford District CID, said “I would like to thank the member of the public who brought this illegal operation to our attention and would appeal to the general public to look out for premises, particularly industrial units, being used as ‘chop shops’.

“The kind of things to look out for are suspicious activity around motor vehicles, high-value cars that are apparently new, frequent movements in and out, and vehicle parts which have been scattered around the premises.

“Handling stolen goods is a serious offence and we will do all we can to disrupt criminals who aim to profit from people’s misery.”

Anyone with information on vehicle crime should contact West Yorkshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

A report commissioned by Bradford Council has revealed that last year’ Tour de France Grand Depart brought an extra £12 million to the district with the potential for £3 million from repeat visitors.

The report shows that local people also spent an estimated £4 million on watching the race in the district.

tour de franceThe research carried out by Welcome to Yorkshire looked at the economic and social impact of the tour which came to the district over the weekend of the 5 and 6 of July 2014. It showed that around 380,000 spectators surrounded the route in the Bradford district over the two days, of which 270,000 were unique spectators. The report estimates that around 150,000 spectators travelled into the Bradford district from other areas to watch the race with an estimated one per cent travelling from overseas.

£2.7 million was spent on accommodation by those watching the event, and a further £8.8 million spent by visitors during the event. The Yorkshire Festival, which attracted visitors to view and participate in arts and cultural events in the 100 day build up to the Grand Depart, brought around £300,000 into the district. Organisers of the Tour de France including local authorities, Welcome to Yorkshire and other partners using local Bradford suppliers spent the remaining £200,000.

A survey of spectators showed that 66 per cent of visitors to the Bradford district for the Tour de France said they would be now more likely to visit Yorkshire for a short break and 73 per cent said they would now be more likely to recommend Yorkshire as a destination, to family and friends.

The survey also showed that 68 per cent of visitors to the Tour de France in Bradford said that their image of Yorkshire had been enhanced by the Tour de France Grand Depart.

In the Bradford district 42 per cent of spectators said that they were inspired to cycle more as a result of the Tour coming to the district.

Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe Executive Member for Employment Skills and Culture said: “I’m pleased to see the huge economic impact which the Grand Depart generated for businesses in the district.  The positive effects of the event are still being felt today. The report anticipates repeat visitors bringing yet more income into the district in the years to come.”

Bradford’s Holocaust Memorial Day brings about a huge turnout

0

By Aalia Khan

Tuesday 27th January marks the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration and death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, the site of the largest mass murder in history.

From 1941 to 1945 the dreadful genocide brought about the killing of approximately six million Jews and an additional five million non-Jewish victims, including one million children, gypsies, Poles, communists, homosexuals, Soviet POWs and the mentally and physically disabled.

026In remembrance of the liberation of the concentration death camp Holocaust Memorial Day ceremonies are carried out throughout the world to remind people to keep the memory of the victims alive. As such Bradford also paid their respects on this day and a Holocaust Memorial Day ceremony was carried out in City Hall as well as a candle light vigil in City Park.

The turnout at both the ceremonies was tremendous and the Lord Mayor of Bradford Councillor Mike Gibbons said “The ceremony is very important and it was good to see so many people here remembering those who are unable to remember as the ability was taken from them. And I think it is important that we continue to do that for them. At the end of the day whatever religion or faith; they’ve all been represented here today and they are all individuals. The turnout was superb and it seems to grow year on year, as the years go on the vivid memories may start to fail but the stories must go on.”

The City Hall remembrance ceremony included; a poem from Paris Tyrell from Dixons City Academy, songs sung by Lapage primary school pupils, guest speaker Orianne Brown; Regional Ambassador for the Holocaust Educational Trust, violinist Mark Ostyn, a poem read by Catherine Benson, a mourning song by Rudi Leavor from the Bradford Synagogue, candles were lit by people from different faiths and backgrounds who affirmed to bear witness that the horrors of the Holocaust will never be forgotten and a minutes silence was then conducted.

025In attendance were also councillors from different wards in Bradford. Cllr Ralph Berry said “It was very, very moving and I am very impressed by the contributions by everyone and it is making sure that we never forget. If we don’t stand up to challenge prejudices, sooner or later you’ll find yourself on your own and everybody is against you.”

Ayub Laher from Jamiat-e-ulema Britain came as a representative from the Muslim community, he said it is important to support all people in the community and “They are all Allah’s creations. All communities need to work together for the common good and if we have peace in our home ground that peace will emanate outward to other people. It is good to remember in such ceremonies as it opens a human’s mind of injustice from one human to another.”

020Rudy Leavor said the ceremony was very moving and the Muslim who has recently joined the City’s synagogue council was instigated by Rudy, he said “I’ve known Jani Rashid for 15 or more years and having already got very close relations with the Muslims and the City it was time that he could join the synagogue council and we could have the value of his considerations.”

MP David Ward, who also attended, said “On Holocaust Memorial Day it’s imperative that we share the memory of the millions who have been murdered in the Holocaust and subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Palestine, Bosnia and Darfur in order to challenge hatred and persecution wherever it resides today. The commemoration provides an opportunity for everyone to pause and take a moment to really think about lessons from the Holocaust, and subsequent genocides in order to ensure, where possible that such atrocities cannot happen again and help create a safer, better future for us all.”

David Ward pledges his support to Prostate Cancer UK’s Men United campaign

0

The new campaign, which starts on Thursday 29th January with a nationwide television campaign, aims to ‘keep friendships alive’ by encouraging men to see their mates more and do something great together to help beat prostate cancer. The campaign launch coincides with a recent YouGov survey1 of over 2,000 men, conducted on behalf of Prostate Cancer UK, which revealed that 84 per cent of men believe that spending time with their mates is good for their health and well-being.

David Ward MPOwen Sharp, Chief Executive of Prostate Cancer UK, whose reception speech revealed the organisation’s ambitious vision to get men across the UK the early detection, effective diagnosis and better treatments they need to beat this disease, said:

“Over the past year, our movement for men – Men United – has caught the imagination, and a new zeal for change in men’s health – with more than 200,000 people signing up to pledge support. Men from all walks of life, from footballers to lawyers and politicians to plumbers, have formed a growing army, raising funds to find the answers for the future through research and supporting men now.

“Now entering its second year, we’re delighted to have the support of David Ward to help us on our journey to ensure every man facing prostate cancer gets early detection, effective diagnosis and better treatments.

“By joining Men United people will get to see their mates more, do something great together and help us beat prostate cancer. Whether it’s big or small, signing a petition or running a marathon, doing it together is what really matters. We know what starts with a quick ‘hello’, a chat in the pub or a barbecue with mates, can end with a nationwide army of men – ready to fight for their friends, themselves and men everywhere.”

David Ward MP also met with Errol McKellar, a mechanic who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2010 and has since dedicated his life to raising awareness of the disease and encouraging men to spread the word. Through Errol’s awareness raising efforts, 24 men have been diagnosed with prostate cancer and have undergone treatment.

David Ward said “I am honoured to be supporting Prostate Cancer UK’s latest drive to encourage more men in Bradford to join Men United in the name of men’s health and to ‘keep friendships alive’.

“Seeing our friends is good for our health and wellbeing and with 1 in 8 men in the UK facing a prostate cancer diagnosis, men never know when they might need a friend to lean on, or be there for a friend who’s received the bad news. Investing in our friendships and being there for our mates is so important and I am wholeheartedly behind this campaign.”

For ideas of how you can spend time with your mates and ‘Keep Friendships Alive’, people are being urged to search Men United, and sign up.

A source present on the set said, “When Jacqueline was told about the dance sequence, she brought a pair of heels from her own collection, as she was comfortable dancing in them.”

Pic 4Jacqueline was a little upset on losing her favorite pair of shoes. Later, she told director Vikramjit Singh that those were among her favourite shoes, but she managed to regain composure and completed the shoot by changing into another pair provided by the production house. Jacqueline said, “It was a Tango dance sequence and I was comfortable dancing in my shoes. But little did I know that these shoes won’t support this dance form and I ended up breaking my heels. The production house had a pair of shoes which were apt for the dance form and I danced in those instead.

Man jailed for sexual abuse of boys

A man has been jailed for ten years after he pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting young boys and sharing images of the abuse on the internet.

juran_mediumDusan Juran, 25, of Bradford Road, Shipley, was sentenced at Bradford Crown Court today (Tuesday, 27 January) after admitting four charges.

Juran was arrested when officers from West Yorkshire Police’s Abusive Images Unit carried out a search warrant of his home in November last year, after receiving information about the online distribution of indecent images and movies.

A number of items were seized from the address, including a mobile phone and a laptop computer.

Following an investigation, Juran, a Czech national, admitted that he had abused a 10-year-old child while on holiday in the Czech Republic.

Evidence of this was found on the computer along with naked photographs of another young boy, who was believed to be about six years old.

Juran was subsequently charged with four offences and was remanded into custody.

Speaking after sentence, Detective Constable John Higgins, of West Yorkshire Police’s Abusive Images Unit, said “The term of imprisonment passed down today reflects the severity of these offences.

“The victims were young boys who do not live in the UK. This case demonstrates that West Yorkshire Police will robustly investigate any offences committed against vulnerable children in our society, not just in the UK, but anywhere in the world.

“We also hope it will encourage other victims of sexual abuse to engage with West Yorkshire Police and our specially trained officers, who will investigate all offences sensitively and thoroughly, with the aim of securing convictions against offenders.”

National Be Clear on Cancer campaign highlights that ongoing heartburn can be sign of cancer!

0

OG Cancer logoDon’t ignore persistent heartburn – talk to your doctor about it

A national ‘Be Clear on Cancer’ campaign launched yesterday to urge people to visit their doctor if they have heartburn most days for three weeks or more, as this can be a sign of

The campaign launch coincides with results of a new survey commissioned by Public Health England, which reveals only 1 in 2 people (55%) would visit their doctor if they had heartburn most days for three weeks or more.

Early diagnosis of oesophageal or stomach cancer (also known as oesophago-gastric cancers) is crucial and means treatment is more likely to be successful. Around 67 per cent of people diagnosed with oesophago-gastric cancers at the earliest stage survive for at least five years. This figure drops to around 3 per cent for those diagnosed at a late stage.

According to the survey findings, 59% of respondents did not know that heartburn could be a sign of cancer with just 15% saying they were certain that it is a symptom.

Professor Muntzer Mughal, Consultant Surgeon & Head of Upper GI Services, University College London Hospitals said “In South Asian culture we’re accustomed to eating spicy food which can sometimes cause heartburn and as a result we may ignore symptoms thinking it isn’t serious.”

“The campaign message is clear – you should go and see your doctor if you have heartburn most days for three weeks or more, it could be a sign of cancer. You won’t be wasting the doctor’s time – you will either get reassurance that it isn’t cancer, or if it is, you will have a better chance of successful treatment.”

Another symptom highlighted by the campaign is that of difficulty swallowing food. Here the survey found that 70% did not know food sticking in the throat could be a sign of cancer, and just 13% of those surveyed said they were sure it is a symptom.

It has been estimated that around 950 lives could be saved in England each year if our survival rates for oesophago-gastric cancers matched the best in Europe.

The UK, with the Netherlands, has the joint highest incidence rate of oesophageal cancer in males in the European Union and the highest incidence rate of oesophageal cancer in females in the European Union. This may be due to smoking, low consumption of fruit and vegetables over time, rising obesity levels and consuming alcohol on a regular basis.

Of those diagnosed with oesophago-gastric cancers, more than 9 out of 10 people are over the age of 50,

Professor Kevin Fenton, National Director of Health and Wellbeing at Public Health England, explains the importance of this awareness activity:

“People may be reluctant to visit their doctor about persistent heartburn, thinking that it’s something they just have to live with but it could be a sign of cancer.”

“We know that in South Asian communities there are cultural, religious and language reasons that can prevent these communities from seeing their doctor early. That’s why it’s important to drive home that the earlier cancer is diagnosed, the higher the chance of survival. We need to encourage people across all sections in society with symptoms to go to their doctor, which is what this latest Be Clear on Cancer campaign aims to do.”
