Over 600 children in Yorkshire and the Humber will face homelessness this Christmas

0

New government figures released this week show that 625 children in Yorkshire and the Humber will face waking up homeless this Christmas morning – a rise of 13% since June.

Fhomelessor many children, this will mean living in one cramped room of a hostel or bed and breakfast with their entire family, sharing a kitchen and bathroom with strangers and eating meals on the bed or floor.

Nationally, the figures show that 93,000 children across the country now face the reality of living in temporary accommodation over the festive season.

Shelter is warning that the sky-high cost of housing and cuts to the housing safety net are making it harder for families to keep a roof over their heads.

Bracing itself for a surge in demand, the charity has launched an emergency fundraising appeal to help make sure it can be there for homeless families this Christmas.

Campbell Robb, chief executive of Shelter, said: “No child should have to face homelessness, especially at this time of year – so it’s heart-breaking to think that hundreds will wake up without a place to call home in Yorkshire and the Humber this Christmas.

“When the worst happens, Shelter is there to help stop people losing their home. Our advisers will be working hard to help all those facing homelessness this Christmas.

“But sadly it’s getting tougher for us to be there for every family that needs us. We urgently need more support from the public so we can make sure no-one has to fight homelessness on their own this Christmas.”

Diabetes UK and Tesco produce new healthy eating guide for South Asian communities

0

Diabetes UK and Tesco have teamed up to launch a new healthy eating guide available in combined English, Urdu, Bengali and Guajarati.

DiabetesUK_final_brandThe Enjoy Food guide will help South Asian families with diabetes shop, cook and eat well, and take the uncertainty out of cooking with diabetes. It offers nutritional advice and recipes as well as suggesting ways to make traditional dishes healthier, such as sprinkling finely chopped coriander seeds on top of lassi for extra flavour. Practical tips on shopping for food, meal planning and healthy swaps are also included.

Eating a healthy balanced diet is key to managing both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, but often traditional Asian recipes are high in fat, salt and sugar, which can mean that blood glucose levels can become unstable.

People from the South Asian community are up to 6 times more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes, and are at risk of the condition from an earlier age than the White European community.

Enjoy Food is funded by Diabetes UK’s National Charity Partnership with Tesco, and aims to promote the message that healthy eating should be an enjoyable part of life for families with diabetes and that by making small changes to the way they shop, plan and prepare their meals, people can eat food that is healthy as well as delicious.

Juliet O’Brien, Diverse Communities Officer at Diabetes UK, said: “Eating well with diabetes can often be tricky, which is why we’ve teamed up with Tesco to produce a healthy eating guide specifically for people with diabetes from the South Asian community.

wholemeal-flour-atta“You can make small swaps to traditional recipes that won’t make a difference to the taste. Take rotis, for example. Why not experiment with brown or wholemeal atta, and try to keep them on the small side, as the bigger and thicker the circle, the more carbohydrate. You could also make rotis without butter or ghee – you won’t even notice the difference when it’s covered in a tasty curry. Finally, if you butter your roti then think about buttering alternate ones on the pile, as that way both rotis will be kept moist using half the amount of butter.

“At the end of the day, cooking should be enjoyable and fun, and is something the whole family can get together over. Having diabetes doesn’t mean you should miss out. By making small changes you can live a healthier lifestyle without even noticing, and this can help improve your diabetes management while still allowing you to enjoy your favourite foods.”

Tories will slash funding for schools, colleges and nurseries by more than a quarter in Bradford research shows

0

Conservatives will cut the Education budget by £172,900 in Bradford by 2020 if they were in Government on their own, official research shows.

imgID7094767The Tories would be forced to slash local spending on schools, colleges and nurseries to keep pace with George Osborne’s drastic spending cuts plan.

It means £173,000 would be wiped of the education budget in Bradford – hitting children’s life chances.

The research, based on official House of Commons library figure, shows schools will bear the brunt of Tory cuts but childcare, college and early year’s budgets would also be hit hard.

David Ward, Bradford East MP said: “These Tory cuts would be devastating for Bradford’s local schools, nurseries and colleges – hitting our children’s life chances hard.

“By committing to a budget surplus by 2020, giving away £7 billion in unfunded tax cut and not raising taxes George Osborne’s axe will have to fall on education.

“This would be a disaster for families and children who all depend good schools and a great teachers in this area.

“Unlike both the Conservatives and Labour, the Liberal Democrats will protect education spending on early years, schools and colleges.

“We believe education is crucial in building a stronger economy and a fairer society – one where every child has the opportunity to get on in life.”

David Ward MP introduces Parliamentary Bill to Register Off Road Vehicles

0

Bradford MP, David Ward MP has today presented a Bill in Parliament calling for off road vehicles to be registered after being sold in order to assist the Police with dealing with anti-social behaviour in Bradford.

David Ward MP with Officers from West Yorkshire Police Quad SquadDavid presented the Off-Road Vehicles (Registration) Bill 2014-15 in Parliament which will make provision for the establishment of a compulsory registration scheme at the point of sale for all off-road motorcycles and quad bikes.

The use of off road vehicles like Quad and Dirt Bikes on our roads is illegal but there is a particular problem in Bradford where these vehicles are used on our roads and estates in order to speed, make a large amount of noise and generally cause a large amount of anti-social behaviour. 15% of all anti-social behaviour calls to West Yorkshire Police relate to the use of Off-Road Vehicles.

West Yorkshire Police are aware of this problem and have in fact been proactive in creating a new “Quad Squad” in Bradford in order to identify and where possible apprehend those that are using off road vehicles illegally. However, due to their speed and manoeuvrability, the Police are often unable to safely pursue those on off road vehicles and are currently unable to trace any acts back to the owners or potential users as they are currently unregistered. This results in crimes going unpunished, which only further encourages the use of these vehicles in Bradford.

David Ward MP with Officers from West Yorkshire Police Quad Squad 2David’s Bill will ensure that when Off Road Vehicles are sold, they will have to be registered. This means that the Police will be able to access records on a vehicles make and model which will better allow them to identity the perpetrators and take enforcement action. David has met with colleagues from West Yorkshire Police on many occasions to discuss his ideas and they welcome David’s proposals as an effective method in helping the Police track those taking part in anti-social behaviour in Bradford and across the country.

In support of this Bill, David has also tabled an Early Day Motion 620 in Parliament calling on the Government to introduce the registration of Off Road Vehicles as a tool to help combat anti-social behaviour.

Discussing his new Bill, Bradford MP David Ward said “Off road vehicles are often used to conduct acts of anti-social behaviour across Bradford and we need to ensure that the Police have all the necessary powers available to them to take effective action.

“The registration of dirt bikes and quad bikes after the point of sale would greatly enhance the ability of the Police to identify and prosecute those people using these vehicles in a dangerous and anti-social manner.

“I have been discussing this matter with West Yorkshire Police and they tell me that the registration of off-road vehicles would be significant step in helping to tackle crime, reduce antisocial behaviour and improving road safety in Bradford.

“I hope that this Bill will raise this as an important issue to the Government which needs addressing. However, for some reason they have been reticence in changing the current law, but it’s a real problem in many areas in Bradford, so I will continue to press the Government to take action”.

David will be publishing the text of his Bill in January next year and will continue to lobby Ministers in Government to implement these measures within a relevant Bill going through Parliament.

SHAH RUKH KHAN & KAJOL CELEBRATE 1000 UNINTERRUPTED WEEKS OF DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE

0

Last week Mumbai saw superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol came together at YRF Studios to celebrate the longest running film in the history of Indian cinema – Yash Raj Films’ iconic Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge directed by Aditya Chopra.

DDLJ-2“It’s been 20 years for this film and I feel honoured that I was part of this film. It’s been 100 years of Indian cinema and I would say one-fifth of it belongs to DDLJ”, Shah Rukh Khan said, and no one could have said it any better.

The DDLJ pair recreated the ‘DDLJ magic’ as they effortlessly recalled all their fond memories from the film, enacted scenes and recounted dialogues.  It seemed like it was only yesterday that the actors worked on the movie. SRK, carrying Raj’s trademark knapsack, filled with memories still reverberating with audiences even today, along with Simran, the ever-bubbly Kajol, shared never before heard movie trivia and anecdotes about director Aditya Chopra and producer Yash Chopra. A spontaneous request to the wife of the late Yash Chopra, Pam Chopra, who was in the audience, to sing the still popular ‘Tujhe Dekha Toh Yeh Jaana Sanam’, left people wanting the evening never to end.

The celebration continued with the unveiling of the very exclusive and special coffee table book written by the private and reclusive Aditya Chopra, about the making of DDLJ: “Aditya Chopra Relives Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge as told to Nasreen Munni Kabir.”

This marks the first time that Aditya Chopra has shared his thoughts about the creation of this extraordinary film, making this book an instant must have for everyone.

DDLJ-1The revelry continued at Mumbai’s iconic Maratha Mandir Cinema where SRK and Kajol regaled the audience in their inimitable style and interacted with a full house of DDLJ lovers who had come to fall in love again and again. A Memento of Appreciation was also presented to the theatre.

The movie released on 20th October 1995 and is in its 20th year of uninterrupted run.

Apparently, Immigration is the reason Nigel Farage didn’t turn up to the “meet Nigel Farage” event

STRAIGHT TALK WITH FARZAN

goodadvice.com__08438Now we can’t ALWAYS be at places and sometimes things come up which means we have to cancel at the last minute – we ARE only human at the end of the day; but personally, if people had paid £25 to come and see me, I would have tried harder to get there – maybe have a think tank or something that tells me I should set off a little bit earlier.

I’m guessing his advisors would have advised him to call and let the event organisers know he’s going to be late, or in this case, not show up – or maybe the phone networks were all jammed up as well because of all those immigrants using the masts and overloading the countries entire telecoms systems.

Nigel Farage told the BBC’s Sunday Politics show that his ‘no-show’ is nothing to do with professionalism but to do with the “open door policy” on Immigration that is “sending population through the roof”.

Yea, alrite Nigel.

So, not showing up to the event is “nothing to do with professionalism”; but blaming immigration for traffic of the M4 is professional?

Maybe the ‘Immigrant’ truck drivers delivering goods to warehouses across the country are to blame; I mean they must have been as they’re “taking all our jobs” eh.

I’ve never met anyone who applied to be a truck driver and didn’t get it because an “immigrant” got it; the reason I’m not a truck driver clogging up the M4 is because I’ve never applied to be one; but I guess Nigel would argue that that’s because there’s no vacancies left because all these immigrants who don’t speak English got there first –if someone who has an added barrier to employment can get the job you can’t; what’s that telling you?

Anyway, I can see how greater competition for employment can affect prospects; but to claim you didn’t show up to an event because the M4 is less navigable due to Immigration is a bit far-fetched.

Maybe it’s set a bit of a precedence– next time you’re late for work, you can tell your boss it’s because of Immigration and if they want you to turn up on time, instead of asking you to take responsibility, they should lobby their MP’s to reduce Immigration – see where that gets you.

Sri Lanka vs. England – sixth one day International

0

By Ayyaz Malik

England came into this game looking to level the series after an impressive five wicket win the last time. The tourists came into this one unchanged as they looked to carry on the winning momentum. As for the hosts, Suranga Lakmal came in place of Ajantha Mendis. Dhamika Prassad also made way for Seekkuge Prasanna and at the top of the order, out of sorts opener, Kusal Pererra is dropped so Dinesh Chandimal came in as the hosts looked to clinch the series with a win in Pallekele.

Kumar Sangakarra’s brilliant hundred help helped Sri Lanka win the seven match series with one game still to play
Kumar Sangakarra’s brilliant hundred help helped Sri Lanka win the seven match series with one game still to play

The hosts won the toss and elected to bat, it initially did not appear as the right decision as Mahela Jayawardena, who was opening in place of form Kusal Pererra, departed cheaply. Jayawardena seemed to have caught the same ‘bug’ as Pererra, the usually reliable Jaywardena, departed cheaply to leave his side in early trouble.

However a second wicket stand of 153 turned the game back in favour of the hosts; chief tormentor in the last game Kumar Sangakarra was up to the same ‘tricks’ in this game as the Sri Lankan wicket keeper and Tilkeratne Dilshan were threatening to take the game from England.

Thankfully for England they managed to get a wicket at a good time; Ravi Bopara taking the catch of James Tredwell’s bowling to remove Dilshan. After the loss of the second wicket Sri Lanka were in danger of throwing away a tremendous start.

Two further wickets fell before the score reached 200, England were looking to get a foothold back in the game – as for Sri Lanka their middle order was on the verge of anther collapse. With Sangakarra still at the crease, Sri Lanka knew they could post a competitive total.

The next wicket to fall would be that of Sangakarra’s, the veteran wicketkeeper managed to score yet another hundred in the midst of the carnage that was happening at the other end as wickets were falling at regular intervals.

The 39 year old eventually departed for a run a ball 112, at that stage Sri Lanka were 243-5 and in a good position to set a total which would be difficult for England to chase. The hosts went on to make 292-7 which was always going to be a difficult total to chase considering the hosts bowling attack.

A near run a ball 35 of just 31 balls from Dinesh Chandimal was another contributing factor to the Sri Lankan’s getting to such a score.

England needing 293 to level the seven match series got off to the worst possible start. Alistair Cook’s struggles continued as he dropped the second ball, James Taylor fell cheaply and Moeen Ali fell for an attractive 34 – but the tourists lost their first three wickets for 50 runs and were on the back foot very early into this run chase.

Just when the tourists looked to be on the road to recovery Sri Lanka made the break through with Lakmal having Ravi Bopara caught behind by centurion Sangakarra to break a fourth wicket partnership that was worth 84.

Just to make matters worse for England they lost another wicket without a run being scored. At 84-5 it felt like the game was up – and sadly it was. Despite a battling 55 from Joe Root and an equally as gutsy 41 from all-rounder Chris Woakes, England lost wickets at regular intervals and eventually fell short of their target by 90 runs.

With that win Sri Lanka take the series with a game to play, as for England the plus point they can take out of this game is that they only have to bowl at Sangakarra once more in this series!

The seventh and final one day international is on Tuesday in Columbo.
