You might think winter is not a good time to explore as it’s cold and gets dark early.
But there is always something to do in London and we can recommend you a few places to visit despite the cold temperatures. You’ll want to avoid attractions where you need to walk outdoors for a long time, such as the London Zoo and Kew Gardens. The cold will get to you and you’ll just want to end your visit quickly, missing out on many good things. Having said that, here are our recommendations.
Ice-Skating
Winter is the only time you can ice-skate outdoors in the capital. Try the moat of Tower Hill or Somerset House, two places well-known for their ice-skating rink.
Theatreland
Just as Paris is famous for its cabarets and Hollywood for Sunset Boulevard, London is synonymous with theatres. Pick the show or musical that you want to watch or alternatively, choose your theatre fi rst. A few famous ones: London Palladium, Shaftesbury Theatre, Theatre Royal, Royal Opera House and the Apollo Theatre.
Premieres
Leicester Square in the heart of the West End very often plays host to world premiers with the movie stars themselves in attendance to promote their latest movies. Fans will queue up for hours come rain or snow just to see them. Maybe not the best time of the year to queue outside but if you find yourself around, why not hop over for a look? Alternatively, you can go to the IMAX on the south bank of the river to view a movie in 3D.
Museums
There are so many in London that a single stay will not suffi ce to see them all, especially when they are mostly free. Decide what kind of person you are – culture vulture, science nerd – and pick the museum that tickles your fancy. The British Museum is the biggest and will take more than on visit to explore completely.
Christmas Fairs and Markets
Several fairs and Christmas markets spring up over the capital in the runner-up to Christmas. Do a spot of shopping, go out with friends for a nice meal or have fun on one of the thrilling rides. Go to Hyde Park for the Winter Wonderland 2012.
Shopping
Retail therapy is always a feel good factor in winter. Wrapped up in nice warm wooly coats and scarves.

‘Jodhaa Akbar’ to be screened at Marrakech film fest
Ashutosh Gowariker’s 2008 epic love story “Jodhaa Akbar” will be showcased at the Marrakech International Film Festival Dec 5. The filmmaker is ecstatic.
“I am extremely happy and would really like to thank the Marrakech International Film Festival for selecting ‘Jodhaa Akbar’. This is an honour for me to showcase my film along with the greatest stars and filmmakers presenting their films at the festival,” Gowariker said in a statement.
“Jodhaa Akbar”, set in sixteenth century, is about a marriage of alliance, which paves way for true love between a great Mughal emperor, Akbar and a Rajput princess, Jodhaa. It featured Hrithik Roshan as Akbar and Aishwarya Rai as Jodhaa.
I’m not ashamed of Selena, says Justin Bieber
Following their dramatic few weeks, it looks like Justin Bieber is still making it up to Selena Gomez, as he couldn’t stop gushing about her in a recent interview.
In a preview of the popstar’s special on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN channel airing online, the singer is seen describing his high profile relationship with Gomez, the Mirror reported.
When asked how they cope with all the attention, Bieber shrugged and said: “Sometimes we gotta take the back exits, but I never make her separate from me. I don’t want her to feel like I’m ashamed of her.”
“A lot of guys do that – especially in the business – they don’t want to be seen with the girl, so they make them ride in separate cars and do all that getaway stuff.
“When we getaway, we’re getting away together at least,” he said.
19 year old Singer Bilal drops the Official Music Video to ‘Jaise Mera Pyaar’
After a successful start to the year with Bilal’s first single ‘Scream Out Loud’ featuring Raxstar, Bilal is ready to release his follow-up single ‘Jaise Mera Pyaar’ produced by Charles Bosco. Combining both English and Urdu lyrics, the single shows a different side of Bilal compared to previous songs. The 19 year old singer talks about ups and downs of a relationship and Bilal’s willingness to make it work.
Kasab’s hanging is relief for attack victims: Amitabh Bachchan
Megastar Amitabh Bachchan feels the execution of Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Amir Kasab has brought relief to those who suffered in the 26/11 Mumbai attack.
“This (decision) proves that law of the land is still there. The sad thing is that so many people lost their lives and somewhere it is a relief for them, especially the police officers,” the 70-year-old told Indian reporters.
“They made a big sacrifice for the country and I believe that it is a big relief for all of us,” added the veteran.
Kasab was hanged in a Pune jail on November 14, 2012, five days before the fourth anniversary of the Mumbai terror attack that claimed 166 lives. Nine of his associates, who were killed, had been secretly buried in the city in January 2010.
New Ford Fiesta debuts MyKey in Britain; Enables parents of young drivers to set top speed and limit audio volume
Britain’s Ford Fiesta will be the first car in the UK to feature Ford’s MyKey technology, which enables parents to place restrictions on younger drivers to promote safer driving.
Ford-exclusive MyKey enables owners to programme a key – usually for younger drivers – that restricts the top speed of the Fiesta, reduces the maximum volume of the audio system, and even disables the audio system altogether if driver and passengers are not using safety belts. It can also prevent the driver from deactivating safety technologies such as Electronic Stability Control and Active City Stop, which can help mitigate or prevent low-speed collisions.
“All parents know that if teenagers are experts at one thing, it’s finding ways of getting into trouble,” said Ford’s European MyKey system architect, Peter Patzelt. “MyKey allows Fiesta owners to set sensible restrictions for young drivers, and delivers peace-of-mind for parents.”
The launch comes as the Government confirms it will take action to improve road safety among young drivers.
European drivers under the age of 25 are up to twice as likely to be involved in a fatal accident*; and a Ford-commissioned survey of the parents of 17- to 20-year-old drivers reveals 46 per cent say their number one concern is that their children are speeding**.
The MyKey system forms part of the new Fiesta’s safety and driver assistance package that also includes SYNC Emergency Assistance and Ford’s Intelligent Protection System with seven airbags.
MyKey was first introduced by Ford in the US, and is now standard on most new North American Ford vehicles. MyKey also now features as standard equipment across much of the new Fiesta range, and Ford ultimately plans to roll-out the technology across its European product line-up by 2015.
MyKey works by recognising different keys for the same car and then adjusting the vehicle settings according to the owner’s requirements. It also enables owners to programme chimes to sound at set points between 40-80mph, prevents seatbelt reminders from being disabled and delivers an earlier low-fuel warning.
The survey of more than 6,000 parents of young drivers across Europe found 53 per cent of parents would be more likely to allow a teenage son or daughter to drive their car if it was equipped with MyKey technology.
“Parents love MyKey because it helps them reduce their teenagers’ exposure to risk at the wheel,” Patzelt said. “Young drivers are not too keen on MyKey until they learn that it often improves the chances their parents will allow them to drive in the first place.”
Sneak peak at the BMW i8 Concept Roadstar
Ahead of it’s debut at the Los Angeles International Auto Show, we managed to get a sneak peak of BMW’s new i8 Concept Roadstar.
With a total powertrain output of 354 horsepower, zero-to-60 mph in 4.6 seconds with revolutionary efficiency, and style like you’ve never seen
The third BMW i concept embodies the future of cutting-edge and emotionally-appealing mobility concepts. The combination of intelligent lightweight design and state-of-the-art hybrid technology imbues the BMW i8 Concept Roadster with genuine sports car performance, yet its efficiency, at an estimated 78 mpg US, is better than you would expect from a small economy car.
Among the most eye-catching features of the BMW i8 Concept Roadster are the upward-swiveling, windowless doors and a range of purpose-oriented on-board equipment including electric kickboards stowed under a transparent tailgate. The car is based on BMW’s innovative LifeDrive architecture, which is underpinned by a lightweight, modular construction and the use of exotic materials. The BMW i8 Concept Roadster is a plug-in hybrid vehicle powered by a high-performance drivetrain of electric motor and gasoline combustion engine. The lithium-ion battery supplying the motor with power can be recharged in a short time.
Whistling Woods International and Bradford College to Launch Best Film School in World
Leading Colleges from UNESCO’s first City of Film and Bollywood have joined forces to create new learning opportunities for aspiring film makers by launching a global film school that aims to be the ‘best film school in the world’.
In a project backed by the British Council, Bradford College and Whistling Woods International have formed a partnership to open a Film School which will be based in Bradford College’s beautiful Old Building. From autumn 2013 students will be able to study a BA (Hons) Film and BA (Hons) Animation. They will enjoy the opportunity to study at the Whistling Woods campus in Mumbai and experience the Indian Film industry first hand. Whistling Woods International – Asia’s premier Film, Television, Animation and Media Arts institute – is rated amongst the 10 best film-schools in the world by ‘The Hollywood Reporter’.
Steve Abbot, award winning film and TV producer and Chair of Bradford City of Film, enthused, “I am enormously proud that the world’s first City of Film is hosting this innovative new film school.” David Wilson, Director of Bradford City of Film added, “Bradford has a fantastic film heritage and a fast growing young population. This is a great way to live up to our UNESCO title with a truly international partnership and help to develop the film makers of the future”.
Award winning film director Daryl Goodrich, whose films have been credited with securing the London winning bid to host the 2012 Olympics, realised that he wanted to be a filmmaker while working on a course project when studying at Bradford College. He said, “The launch of a new film school in Bradford marks the start of something really special for both the College and the city. As a location, Bradford evokes creativity; it is culturally diverse and has an abundance of stunning areas in which to film. Over the years Bradford has produced some amazing creative talent, and now by hosting its own International film school, the level of creativity will continue to flourish. I wish them every success with this venture.”
Trevor Griffiths, Associate Director Innovation & Projects, at Bradford College, said: “Setting up of this film school at Bradford College cements Bradford’s standing as the number one destination for film. It’s a fantastic offer that will put Bradford centre stage and we’re thrilled to be working with some of the world’s most renowned experts in film.”
Subhash Ghai, Chairman of Whistling Woods International, said, “It is a great privilege for Whistling Woods to be associated with a college of this stature internationally. We have found a perfect partner in Bradford College.” Meghna Ghai-Puri, President, Whistling Woods International, commented, “Our relationship with Bradford College has been one of trust and great success. We share the same vision of having a truly International Film School in the UK. It is exciting to be associated with a renowned Institution such as Bradford College and we are humbled by the support offered to us by the British Councils in India and the UK”
This move comes after a four-year affiliation between Bradford College and Whistling Woods International. In 2009, students from both institutions worked together to create an award winning stop-motion animation, The Music of Life. Since then they have continued work on partnerships in photography, prosthetics hair and make-up, animation and fashion design.
