The world’s favourite lasagne-loving feline is set to return to the big screen, with actor Chris Pratt confirmed to once again lend his voice to Garfield in a sequel to The Garfield Movie (2024). The original animated film, which reintroduced the iconic comic strip character to a new generation, grossed over $230 million at the global box office, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Released by Sony Pictures (except in China), The Garfield Movie proved to be a major success, paving the way for a follow-up adventure. Alcon Entertainment’s co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson will return as producers, alongside John Cohen, Steven P. Wegner, and Pratt himself. Prime Focus Studios, helmed by Namit Malhotra, will co-produce the film, with DNEG Animation once again overseeing the animation, as they did for the first instalment.
The rights to Garfield were originally acquired by Alcon from the character’s creator, Jim Davis, who will continue to serve as executive producer on the sequel, along with Bridget McMeel of Amuse.
While the project is moving forward, the writer and director for the sequel have yet to be announced, with the production team currently on the lookout for the right creative leads.
Chris Pratt, best known for his roles in blockbuster franchises such as Jurassic World and Guardians of the Galaxy, adds this sequel to his growing list of animated projects. He is also involved in several upcoming productions, including Mercy for Amazon, as well as MGM and Way of the Warrior Kid for Apple and Skydance.
Fans of the beloved orange cat can look forward to more animated mischief as Garfield returns to charm audiences once again.
