Ever since the beginning of the pandemic, the future of cinemas has been uncertain, to say the least. All venues were intially closed in the first lockdown in March 2020, and then all theatres had to reclose once again in October.

Thankfully, however, Cineworld have officially announced that they will be opening their doors to their UK venues in May. The news follows after the announcement that their US company, Regal, would reopen April 2.

Cineworld have officially struck a deal with Warner Bros in an attempt to get people back into cinema seats once the franchise reopens. The new agreement states that Cineworld will be given an exclusive 31-day period to screen releases before films are moved on to online platforms.

There are many upcoming blockbuster projects under the Warner Bros label. ‘Godzilla Vs Kong’ is likely to be one of the first releases that hits UK screens. The monster epic has already released globally this week but the UK premiere has currently been delayed due to the pandemic. In addition, the next line up in the James Bond series, ‘No Time To Die’, is also due out later this year.

There is still a long way to go before cinema and the film industry return to normal post-pandemic, but the announcement of the reopening brings us one step closer to pre-COVID conditions.
