Miley Cyrus has offered rare insights into her past with ex-husband Liam Hemsworth, reflecting on how their early collaboration on ‘The Last Song’ has shaped her approach to creative partnerships, including her work with boyfriend Maxx Morando on her upcoming album, Something Beautiful.
Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar for their December 2024/January 2025 issue, Cyrus revealed her preference for working with loved ones, saying, “That’s how me and my ex-husband met each other. I’ve always worked with the people that I love. And Maxx just inspires me so much.”
Cyrus and Morando, a drummer for the rock band Liily, have been collaborating for over two years, with Morando co-producing multiple tracks on Something Beautiful, including its title song. The album, slated for release in 2025, marks a significant departure from Cyrus’s previous work, venturing into a more avant-garde soundscape.
Describing the project, Cyrus shared, “It’s a concept album that’s an attempt to medicate somewhat of a sick culture through music. The songs, whether they’re about destruction, heartbreak, or death, are presented in a way that is beautiful.”
Something Beautiful promises to be a visual album, heavily influenced by fashion, art, and cinema. Drawing inspiration from Thierry Mugler’s iconic 1995 couture collection and the surrealist 1982 musical drama Pink Floyd: The Wall, Cyrus is crafting a project that blends high-concept visuals with healing sound properties.
“I can show [my producer] a painting or a dress, and I’ll tell him to convey those colours or that fabric with sound,” she explained.
Producer Shawn Everett teased the album’s experimental nature, saying, “It’s more experimental than anything she’s ever done, but in a pop way that I love.”
Cyrus’s nostalgic reflections on her relationship with Hemsworth also surfaced. In a TikTok shared last year, she reminisced about meeting him on the set of The Last Song, saying, “It was watching two very young people fall in love with each other, which was happening in real time.” Their on-and-off relationship spanned a decade before their eventual divorce in 2020.
