The pop world is abuzz with excitement over Britney Spears’ upcoming biopic, inspired by her memoir The Woman in Me. Directed by Jon M. Chu—hot off his critically acclaimed Wicked adaptation, which secured 10 Academy Award nominations—the project promises to be a deeply personal portrayal, with Britney herself playing a key role in shaping the narrative.
At the Golden Globes earlier this month, Chu revealed that Britney would be “very involved” in the film. Reflecting on his early admiration for the star, he said, “I’ve been a fan since I was young… she was one of 12 acts at the Shrine Auditorium.” While details remain sparse, Chu’s commitment to honouring Britney’s story is clear, with the film still in its early stages of development.
However, what’s caught fans’ attention is Britney’s alleged involvement in selecting the actress to play her. According to Life & Style, two A-list stars top her wishlist: Natalie Portman and Selena Gomez.
Britney reportedly holds a deep admiration for Portman, considering her an “incredible actress” capable of transforming into the pop icon with the right makeup. Similarly, Britney’s fondness for Gomez stems from her respect for the singer-actress, who, like Britney, has a history as a child star. Britney believes this shared experience would help Gomez connect with the role on a personal level.
While the idea of casting such big names may seem intriguing, fans have been less than convinced. Many feel neither actress closely resembles Britney or exudes the same “naive but firecracker energy” she became known for.
One sceptical fan quipped, “I don’t buy it tbh lmao. It’s like someone just made this up by using two of the only actresses Britney has been known to publicly admire. Did they also say she wants Brad Pitt to play Justin [Timberlake]?” Another simply commented, “Yikes.”
The consensus among fans appears to lean towards casting an unknown actress, ideally someone with a background in dance or gymnastics who can embody Britney’s unique spirit. “If something does happen with this, I hope they cast someone new—someone gifted and more like Britney than anyone in Hollywood,” one fan suggested.
As the debate continues, one thing is certain: the casting choice for this highly anticipated biopic will be under intense scrutiny. For now, fans will have to wait and see who ultimately steps into the shoes of the pop princess.
