Fans are sending an outpouring of love and support to Dolly Parton after the country music legend announced the passing of her husband Carl Dean at the age of 82.
Dean, who was married to Parton for nearly 60 years, passed away in Nashville, Tennessee on Monday. The famously private couple shared a lifelong love story that remained largely out of the spotlight – a testament to their unwavering bond.
In a heartfelt statement, the Jolene singer wrote:
“Carl and I spent many wonderful years together. Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy.”
Fans quickly flooded social media with messages of comfort, with one writing,
“Sending you and your family all our love, Dolly.”
Another shared,
“Oh Dolly, my heart goes out to you and yours.”
The pair’s love story began in 1964 when they met outside a laundromat on Dolly’s first day in Nashville. Two years later, they tied the knot in a private ceremony in Georgia, beginning a marriage that would last a lifetime.
Despite Dolly’s global fame, Carl chose to live life away from the public eye, dedicating himself to his asphalt-paving business. However, his quiet presence left a mark on her music – famously inspiring the classic hit Jolene.
Parton once joked that their relationship was so private, many people believed her husband didn’t even exist.
“A lot of people say there’s no Carl Dean, that he’s just somebody I made up to keep other people off me.”
Though they had no children together, their love remained the centre of Parton’s life – a rare and cherished partnership in the world of showbiz.
Carl is survived by his siblings, Sandra and Donnie, as well as the enduring love of the woman he stood by for over six decades.
Rest in peace, Carl Dean, the man behind the music.
