Steven Knight, the creator and screenwriter behind Peaky Blinders, has confirmed that the upcoming spin-off film will not mark the end of the beloved franchise. In a recent interview, Knight teased that the Peaky Blinders universe will likely continue after the film, potentially with more seasons.
“Well, it’s interesting you should ask that question because the film is coming out and that won’t be the end. It won’t be the end, let me put it that way. I’m not saying none of it,” Knight revealed, as quoted by Deadline. His comments suggest that Peaky Blinders fans can expect more stories from the iconic world of Tommy Shelby (played by Cillian Murphy), even after the highly anticipated film hits screens.
The Peaky Blinders television series, which concluded its sixth and final season in April 2022, captivated audiences with its portrayal of the Shelby crime family in post-World War I Birmingham. Despite the series finale, which wrapped up many storylines, it left the door open for future developments, particularly surrounding Tommy Shelby’s journey.
Principal photography for the spin-off film commenced in late September, with exciting new updates from the set quickly surfacing online. Murphy is set to reprise his role as the sharp-witted and ruthless leader of the Shelby family, with a fresh line-up of stars joining him. Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible, Dune), Barry Keoghan (The Banshees of Inisherin, Saltburn), and Tim Roth (Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs) are among the notable additions to the cast, alongside Peaky Blinders veteran Stephen Graham, who portrayed Hayden Stagg in the final season.
Knight has also shared insights into the plot of the spin-off, which will delve into World War II England. While the original series charted the rise of the Shelby gang family through the turbulent 1920s, the upcoming film is set to explore the continued evolution of the family during a different period in history.
Though details remain scarce, the involvement of such high-calibre talent and the rich historical context of the WWII setting has already sparked significant anticipation for the film. With Knight’s suggestion that the Peaky Blinders story may continue beyond this, fans of the series can likely look forward to even more twists, turns, and drama from one of television’s most iconic crime families.
