When a horror franchise sees its global box office drop from an impressive $181 million to just $39 million, the industry takes notice and responds accordingly. This is exactly what has happened with the M3GAN universe.
The latest instalment, Soulm8te, is set to bypass theatres altogether and head straight to digital platforms starting 1 August 2026through Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.
The original M3GAN, released in 2023 and produced by James Wan and Jason Blum, was a surprising hit. It not only grossed over $181 million worldwide on a modest budget but also sparked a cultural phenomenon that transcended the horror genre.
M3GAN became a meme, a popular Halloween costume, and a representation of our anxieties about artificial intelligence, something no marketing campaign could have orchestrated. The film truly earned its success.
In contrast, M3GAN 2.0 told a very different story. Released last June, it opened to just $10 million domestically and wrapped up its theatrical run at a disappointing $39 million worldwide. This significant drop effectively closed the door on continuing the franchise in theatres.
Enter Soulm8te, the pivot that moves the franchise in a new direction. Directed by Kate Dolan, known for her acclaimed body-horror film You Are Not My Mother, this spin-off shifts the focus to themes of AI and loneliness.
The story centres around a grieving engineer tasked with testing a new, sophisticated AI android from a ruthless tech giant.
As he tries to programme her to be his perfect soulmate, she begins to develop her own desires, leading to what the official synopsis describes as “a relentless spree of precision-engineered mayhem.”
The cast includes Lily Sullivan, David Rysdahl, Claudia Doumit, and Arty Froushan. Wan and Blum return as producers alongside Michael Clear, Judson Scott, and Ingrid Bisu, while Alayna Glasthal oversees the project for Atomic Monster.
Dolan has been thoughtful about what drew her to Soulm8te. She sees it as an exploration of relationships and loneliness, noting, “Despite technological advances, there are enduring human truths we cannot escape, and I am looking forward to delving into those depths.”
This focus on loneliness—viewed as a vulnerability that technology often exploits rather than alleviates—seems to be the most intriguing aspect of Soulm8te. The original M3GAN resonated because it tapped into a recognisable emotional struggle: a child’s need for love and an AI designed to fulfil it unconditionally. In a similar vein, Soulm8te appears to tackle adult grief and connection, portraying a man who, in his search for solace, inadvertently finds something far more perilous.
Whether this straight-to-digital release will connect with the audience it deserves or signal a franchise struggling with its theatrical confidence is a question time will answer through streaming numbers. For now, Soulm8te is set to premiere on 1 August 2026 with a captivating premise, a capable director, and the James Wan brand still backing it—even if it won’t hit cinema screens.
Mark your calendars, as Soulm8te streams on digital platforms starting 1 August 2026 via Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.
