Tomorrow will see the release of Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor’s film ‘Roohi’. The horror-comedy is currently set to debut with one of the biggest box office records since the beginning of the pandemic last year. Whilst this is thanks to Indian cinemas opening back up and increasing their capacity, the importance of the film’s genre is certainly not to be overlooked.
There have been many horror-comedies throughout Bollywood history that have done very well. From Akshay Kumar’s stint in ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’ up until the recent ‘Stree’, the genre has proved time and again that it is popular amongst audiences. Now, we seem to be entering into something of a horror-comedy renaissance, with many films due out set to fit the genre and producer Dinesh Vijan planning a “horror-comedy” cinematic universe of sorts.
So, if you are a fan of the genre and want to know what you can look forward to, here’s all the biggest horror-comedies that are set to released over the coming year…
Roohi is all set to debut in India on March 11. The film will see the actress face off against Rajkummar Rao and Varun Sharma. In Roohi, Kapoor will play the titular character, a possessed girl, who is struggling to maintain who she is. In strange circumstances, Hitesh (Rao) and Lakiresh (Sharma) end up trapped in the middle of the woods with the girl and must try to find a way to save her. Things get really mixed up in this horror-comedy, however, when both the men realise they have accidentally fallen in love with Roohi! Recently, Kapoor debuted her song ‘Nadiyoon Paar’ for the film, and many across India are excited to see what this project has in store.
Bhoot Police stars Saif Ali Khan, Yami Gautam, Jacqueline Fernandez and Arjun Kapoor as a make-shift team of ghostbusters, struggling to defeat spirits. Shoot for the film began in last November and was completed by February 5. The film has been shot across Himachal Pradesh, Mumbai and Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer and has been directed by Pavan Kirpalani, who earlier made Ragini MMS and Phobia. The film will release in theatres on September 10.
‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’ is all set to hit theatres on November 19. The film stars Kartik Aaryan, Kiara Advani and Tabu. The Anees Bazmee directorial film follows the 2007 horror comedy Bhool Bhulaiyaa, which starred Akshay Kumar, Shiney Ahuja, Vidya Balan and Ameesha Patel. The film is expected to be a different tale with new characters but, from the looks of the posters, Aaryan will be donning the iconic yellow outfit for the project. It has also been reported that Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 will include two songs from the original film.
Bollywood stars Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon are all set to collaborate on the upcoming Dinesh Vijan’s ‘Bhediya’. After ‘Roohi’, ‘Bhediya’ will be the next in a line of Vijan horror-comedies. This film will mark the stars’ third collaboration with each other after sharing screen spaces in 2015 rom-com ‘Dilwale’ and 2019 ‘Kalank’. ‘Bhediya’ will bring together the dynamic duo of producer Dinesh Vijan and director Amar Kaushik, who also helmed the 2018 blockbuster movie ‘Stree’. The story is written by National Award Winner, Niren Bhatt who also wrote intriguing scripts for ‘Bala’, ‘Made in China’ and ‘Wrong Side Raju’. Bhediya will release on April 14 2022.
Yet another Dinesh Vijan horror-comedy will be ‘Munjha’. The producer has roped in Sanjana Sanghi for the film, which will be a prequel to ‘Stree’. Munjha will provide a bit more context to the original ‘Stree’ story. The film will be shot by director Yogesh Chandekar and will start shooting in September. We currently have no release date for the film but we can assume it will be due out around next summer.
