Do you remember Rajkumar Kohli’s 2002 fantasy action thriller Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani? The star-studded film featuring Akshay Kumar, Sunny Deol, and Suniel Shetty is often remembered for its campy charm and frequent television re-runs. In a recent interview with Pinkvilla, Akshay Kumar opened up about how he ended up with an extended role in the film – and the story is as amusing as the movie itself.
Akshay revealed that his role was initially much smaller. His character was killed by Armaan Kohli’s shape-shifting snake, which should have marked the end of his screen time. However, Akshay, who was being paid on a daily basis, saw an opportunity. “I wanted money to buy a flat,” he admitted.
After realising that the production was struggling to secure another actor’s dates, Akshay approached director Rajkumar Kohli with a suggestion. “I said, ‘Paaji, should I do it instead?’ He said, ‘But you are dead.’ After five minutes, he said, ‘Listen, Akshay! I’ll put you in a coma so you can come back.’ So, if you watch the film, you’ll see that I’m in a coma, not dead. Then I wake up and fight Armaan again. That got me paid for five more days,” Akshay said, laughing.
While he took on the film for personal financial reasons, Akshay acknowledged the film’s enduring appeal, calling it a “cult” classic thanks to its loyal following and frequent television broadcasts.
Jaani Dushman remains Akshay Kumar’s only pure horror film, though he’s dabbled in horror-comedies like Priyadarshan’s 2007 hit Bhool Bhulaiyaa. Akshay is currently filming its spiritual successor, Bhooth Bangla, in Jaipur. The film stars Paresh Rawal, Tabu, and Wamiqa Gabbi.
The actor also shared that he and his wife, Twinkle Khanna, are avid horror buffs.
What’s next for Akshay?
Akshay Kumar is set to feature in a slew of upcoming projects, including Sky Force, Jolly LLB 3, Shankara, Housefull 5, Welcome to the Jungle, and Hera Pheri 3. With his versatility and penchant for memorable roles, fans can expect plenty of excitement in the months ahead.
