10 October is observed across the globe as World Mental Health Day to raise awareness of mental health issues and to advocate for mental health care. The day was first celebrated in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health.

The theme for World Mental Health Day 2023 is “Mental health is a universal human right.” This theme highlights the fact that everyone has the right to the highest attainable standard of mental health, regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, or any other factor.

Keeping in mind, the importance the day holds in one’s life, Bollywood director Karan Johar took to instagram to share his own experience with anxiety and depression.

As per his post, in 2015-2016, Karan Johar faced his first battle with anxiety, an unexpected challenge.

With the guidance of a psychologist and lifestyle changes, he managed to overcome it and eventually stopped taking medication. However, in March of this year, it resurfaced due to a specific trigger, prompting him to emphasize the importance of timely intervention.

The Rocky Rani director cautions against offering simplistic solutions like going for a drive or meeting friends to those struggling with anxiety or depression. Instead, he urges families to ensure that their loved ones seek professional help. He points out that while we readily address physical health issues like blood pressure and diabetes, mental health should not be neglected.

Karan commends those who courageously confront their mental health issues and offers encouragement to those who suffer in silence, assuring them that a better life awaits if they reach out for help.
