The undisputed lightweight champion in the UFC, Charles Oliveira is willing to wait until May to allow Conor McGregor to jump the que and fight him.

Charles Oliveira successfully retained his lightweight championship belt after defeating Dustin Poirier earlier in the month. This was Charles’ first title defense after claiming the belt after beating Michael Chandler earlier in the year.

On the other hand, Conor McGregor hasn’t had the best of years in his MMA career after losing twice to Dustin Poirier in there much fueled bad-blood fight which happened. McGregor had defeated Poirier back in 2014 but lost in a massive upset in 2020 and recently lost again after breaking his ankle in their third contest.

Despite McGregor losing his last two fights in a row, Charles has expressed he is willing to fight McGregor in May. This doesn’t seem much of a shock as millions of fans know whenever McGregor fights it’s always a big event.

However, what might not go down well with one fighter is Justin Gaethje who recently beat Michael Chandler in an all-out war on the undercard of Usman vs Covington 2 and was promised a title fight next.

Gaethje has been on a run to get the title after beating Tony Fergusson and claiming the interim title. Gaethje did get the chance to fight for the title when we fought Khabib Nurmagomedov in what was Khabib’s last fight. Gaethje was unable to beat the former champion but went on to fight for a qualifier against Michael Chandler.

In many eyes of the people, the lightweight title is the holy grail of the UFC as it has some of the biggest names in the entire organisation.

Oliveira has proven he is the best and the champion in that division after recently beating everyone who has been put in front of him. Even Oliveira knows taking the fight with McGregor will be a big pay out for him as some fans are 50/50 as they also want to see Charles get the ‘McGregor payday’ that fighters normally get when they fight him.

Fans also assumed that the big payday Poirier received after fighting McGregor affected his ability in the fight for the belt against Oliveira. Poirier admits after beating McGregor the second time he knew they would end up fighting a third time and went straight back into training camp.

Although Oliveira could set himself up for a big payday, they do feel it’s unfair for Oliveira to not give the fight to Justin Gaethje.

What are your thoughts on what could transpire in the new year? Do you think McGregor could shock the world and become champion again or does Dana White force Oliveira to face Gaethje next for the lightweight championship strap?
