Themes regarding transgender community have always been taboo in Pakistani culture and the entertainment industry for decades. It wasn’t until recently that people starting to be more accepting towards them and the industry was quick to be inclusive as well. Dramas such as ‘Sar-e-Rah’, ‘Khuda mera bhi hai’, and ‘Alif Allah aur Insan’ surrounding transgender storylines had a deep impact on audiences.
Just now, Pakistani actor Ali Rehman Khan, took to social media to announce his new project ‘Guru’, which is set to air later this year. Details on the poster were attention-grabbing as it showcased the actor having his head wrapped in drape, somewhat like a woman.
It wasn’t until the trailer aired, that viewers realised what the hype was about. The drama aims to focus on life of a transgender character and how they evolve as a community in Pakistan. Many viewers especially from the transgender community were quick to call out the actor and director for the lack of authentic representation.
Shehzadi Rai, prominent transgender activist, also expressed disapproval. “It denies opportunities for members of the khwajasira community to tell their own stories”, she said. While many have backed her up on different social media platforms, asking for transgender people to be casted for such roles, some have been supportive to the actor saying that he is just doing his job. A while back, transgender actress Alina Khan starred in film ‘Joyland’ for which she received immense praise. Comparing the two, viewers have also allegedly called the industry a hypocrite.

Inclusivity has always been a sensitive issue for Pakistani entertainment industry. While being actively portrayed in films and dramas, transgender community is still marginalised in many parts with little to no rights. Regardless of whether or not the actor will be replaced, we hope that the drama focuses on important issues regarding the community and bring more awareness to public.
