Chennai was treated to a spectacular performance on Wednesday evening as Grammy-winning artist Ed Sheeran and the legendary A. R. Rahman took to the stage for an unforgettable collaboration. The two music giants joined forces for a unique mash-up, blending Sheeran’s global hit Shape of You with Rahman’s iconic Urvashi, creating a fusion of cultures that had the crowd on their feet.
The performance saw Sheeran strumming his guitar while Rahman took over the mic, delivering his vocals to the familiar metronome beat of Shape of You, seamlessly merging the two tracks in a way only these two musical maestros could.
The event, part of Sheeran’s ongoing tour, was opened by playback singer Jonita Gandhi, known for her popular tracks like Gilehriyaan and What Jhumka. Speaking about her excitement to perform alongside Ed, Jonita shared, “I’ve been a huge fan of Ed’s for quite a while! I’ve covered some of his music in the past. I absolutely love how versatile he is and how he crosses genres so seamlessly and authentically.”
She continued, “I was really disappointed to miss his last performance in Mumbai, but I’m so excited to see him perform live and even more stoked to share a stage with him in Chennai.”
Last year, Ed Sheeran also teamed up with Punjabi superstar Diljit Dosanjh for a memorable performance in Mumbai. The two musicians were seen bonding at the event, which Diljit later shared on his Instagram with the caption “ONE LOVE.”
The concert in Chennai was organised by AEG Presents Asia and BookMyShow Live, adding another unforgettable chapter to Sheeran’s – = ÷ x Tour.
