Jacob Elordi’s much-anticipated series, The Narrow Road to the Deep North, is already making waves ahead of its Berlinale premiere, securing major international distribution deals. The five-part drama, adapted from Richard Flanagan’s Booker Prize-winning novel, has now been picked up by Sky and Max in Europe and NBC Universal in Latin America, with more sales expected across the Middle East and Europe.
The Justin Kurzel-directed adaptation will land on Prime Video in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada from 18 April, while BBC has snapped up the UK rights. In Europe, the series will be available via Sky in Germany, Austria, and German-speaking Switzerland, while Max will stream it in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). RTÉ (Ireland), Movistar Plus+ (Spain), Nova (Greece), AXN (Portugal), and LG Uplus (South Korea) have also secured the rights.
Despite its strong international reception, The Narrow Road to the Deep North is yet to secure a U.S. distributor. However, with its star-studded cast, breathtaking cinematography, and emotionally charged storytelling, it’s only a matter of time before an American platform locks it in.
What’s the story?
The Saltburn star plays Lieutenant-Colonel Dorrigo Evans, an Australian doctor whose torrid love affair with his uncle’s wife, Amy Mulvaney (Odessa Young), haunts him throughout his life. Told across multiple timelines, the series follows Dorrigo as a Far East prisoner of war during the brutal construction of the Burma Railway. Decades later, he grapples with fame, guilt, and regret, struggling to reconcile his heroic public image with his private turmoil.
Elordi and Kurzel have arrived in Berlin for the Berlinale Special Gala, where the series is expected to make a big impact. Given its cinematic scope, stunning visuals, and emotionally charged performances, The Narrow Road to the Deep North is shaping up to be one of the most powerful TV dramas of the year.
“This is a sweeping love story with a star-studded cast, anchored by one of today’s hottest stars, Jacob Elordi,” said Mike Wald, EVP, International Distribution & Networks, Sony Pictures Entertainment. “It is beautifully shot, cinematic in scope, and, given its five-episode arc, can easily be scheduled across any platform.”
The team behind the show
The series is written by Shaun Grant (Mindhunter, Nitram) and directed by Justin Kurzel (Nitram, The Order). Jo Porter and Rachel Gardner of Curio Pictures serve as executive producers, alongside Flanagan, Grant, and Kurzel. Alexandra Taussig is the producer, with Screen Australia and the NSW Government’s Screen NSW fund providing principal production funding.
With its gripping love story, war-time drama, and psychological depth, The Narrow Road to the Deep North looks set to be a must-watch when it arrives this April. Now, all that’s left is for the U.S. to join the party.
