The fear of being typecast is a common apprehension in Bollywood, but few have mastered the art of overcoming this apprehension and landing an excellent role with similar characters.

To be able to play a character that one has played a million times before, an actor must be exceptional. In Indian cinema, it is unquestionably Tabu who has managed to play a variety of roles with skill and tact.

Currently, Tabu is garnering praise for the first look of her recent film Bholaa where she is seen as a cop.  Bholaa is an official Hindi remake of the Tamil hit Kaithi. Directed by Ajay Devgn, Bholaa narrates the story of an ex-convict (played by Devgn) who wants to meet his daughter after being released from prison but gets caught in a face-off between the police and drug mafia.

It seems Tabu has developed her own cop universe over the years. She previously portrayed a cop in the movies including Kuttey, Drishyam, Drishyam 2, and Kohram. She is regarded as a chameleon who is adept at fitting each role, therefore to her credit, all her films in which she plays a cop have received positive reviews.

Tabu who comes with a certain skill set has typically been cast in the most significant roles in the past. Cut to 2023 and she is back to set a new stage for actors. Surprisingly, female actors are being cast as cops in films, which was not the norm back then. Earlier female actors were just reduced to song – dance and glam quotient.

More and more powerful roles for women are being written, indicating that women are ready to take the baton and dive into action head-on. Previously, these films were only limited to so-called macho heroes, but it’s interesting to see Tabu taking on the challenge and playing tough roles blatantly.

It’s fascinating to see how Tabu is creating her own cop universe, which will hopefully inspire many more filmmakers to cast more women as cops in future projects.
