INDIA LAUNCHES MASSIVE PUBLIC HEALTH CAMPAIGN TO ELIMINATE LYMPHATIC FILARIASIS

0

India was certified polio-free in 2014. Today, the country has the opportunity to achieve its next public health victory with the elimination of lymphatic filariasis, a neglected tropical disease (NTD) that threatens nearly half of its population. To meet this ambitious goal, the Indian Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MOHFW) has launched one of the largest public health campaigns in India’s history to provide more than 400 million people with free medication that could protect them from lymphatic filariasis.

LF CampaignLymphatic filariasis, also called filaria or elephantiasis, can cause horrible disability and disfigurement among those infected. The disease has high prevalence and serious complications, but its prevention is very easy. The MOHFW, however, has faced enormous difficulties in combating the disease. Many people are complacent when it comes to prevention; in part because of apathy toward the disease and the length of time it takes to manifest itself (8 to 10 years). In addition, many people fail to consume their medicine even with the government’s door-to-door efforts to deliver free, preventive doses and educational messaging in endemic regions.

“India has made great strides over the last decade to eliminate lymphatic filariasis in endemic states and we are now on the verge of reaching elimination targets nationally. However, the last mile of the journey is often the most difficult,” said Mr. C.K. Mishra, Additional Secretary and Mission Director of the National Health Mission at the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. “We are employing a wide range of new communications tactics and partnerships that will help us encourage all people at risk from this disease to consume their free dose of medicine during our annual mass drug administrations.”

The MOHFW partnered with the Global Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases (Global Network), an initiative of the Sabin Vaccine Institute, to lead the development of a branded public service advertising campaign (PSA) called “Hathipaon Mukt Bharat” (Filaria Free India) in close coordination with the MOHFW’s National Vector Borne Disease Control Program. This creative campaign and promotional plan supports the government’s massive effort to deliver preventive medication to high-risk communities within 17 states, including four states in particular that comprise nearly two-thirds of the lymphatic filariasis burden in India: Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar and West Bengal.

“Nearly 500 million people in India are at risk of contracting lymphatic filariasis,” said Dr. Neeraj Mistry, Managing Director of the Global Network and a campaign consultant for the MOHFW. “India’s success in eliminating this devastating disease will bolster global efforts to eliminate lymphatic filariasis and other neglected tropical diseases in other endemic countries. The ’Hathipaon Mukt Bharat‘ (Filaria Free India) campaign supports the attainable goal of lymphatic filariasis elimination in India and we commend the leadership of the Government of India on this critical initiative.”

The Global Network turned to Ogilvy & Mather Mumbai and Little Lamb Productions to execute the development of the creative campaign. The task was to attract greater attention to the seriousness of the disease and the importance and simplicity of taking preventative medication.

“We were immediately drawn to the idea that eliminating filaria in India can be the country’s next big public health success story,” said Sumanto Chattopadhyay, Executive Creative Director, South Asia, Ogilvy Mumbai. “The theme of working together to wipe away this terrible disease became an early cornerstone of our creative direction and from there we built other important elements into our concepts, including intrigue and an uplifting, simple message that would stick with our target audience.”

These PSAs are being disseminated through media channels in India, predominantly on regional television channels, Doordashan TV and All India Radio, with print-based advertisements in vernacular, state-specific media. The online version of the campaign videos was launched on January 9, 2015.

Reliance Group, one of India’s largest conglomerates, also has lent its corporate support to the campaign by agreeing to promote it through the company’s mobile, mass media and web-based channels. Their involvement is set to take center stage when the second phase of the campaign begins in February 2015, with mass drug administrations taking place in states not covered during the first phase, including Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

The Campaign Film Storyline

Intrigue is created to lead villagers to a patient with a manifestation of lymphatic filariasis, also known as filaria or elephantiasis (“Hathipaon” in colloquial Hindi). Key messaging highlights the irreversible nature of advanced filaria and, at the same time, the simplicity of its prevention. Care has been taken to sensitively handle the subject and to create empathy with the patient. The patient himself delivers the most important message — “this disease can happen to anyone.” Portraying a pitiful picture of the patient is avoided and instead he is shown as a champion who encourages people to participate in the mass drug administration and consume the pills for a “Hathipaon Mukt Bharat” — Filaria Free India. The campaign also emphasizes that the pills are free and safe, and, if everyone consumes their dose of the pills duly, it will help in achieving the larger goal: to eliminate filaria from India.

The victim told officers she had been assaulted by a man who picked up her up in a car in King Lane, near to the junction with Buck Stone Gardens, after she became lost while trying to find her way back into the city centre after calling at an address in Moortown.

The suspect had been heading towards Leeds when he pulled up next to the victim. She asked him for directions to Leeds train station and he agreed to take her there.

Peaceful multi-faith protest to be held in Bradford to highlight hypocrisy of ‘Freedom of Speech’

0

Bradford citizens have spoken out about what they believe to be ‘hypocrisy of freedom of speech’, to express their views a peaceful multi-faith protest will be held on Saturday 17th January at Bradford’s Centenary Square at 7:30pm.

protestThe protest has been organised after the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo returned to work, after masked gunmen stormed its Paris offices and killed 12 people last week, and their first cover upon their return depicted the Islamic Prophet Muhammad.

Soon after the attacks many leaders across the world spoke out about their disgust and horror towards the attack and a unity march took place in Paris in which many of the leaders were involved in.

In the upcoming event people will be gathering to question why the world leaders had not conducted marches for other attacks that have taken place across the world.

The protest also touches upon the view that Muslims are being victimsed and treated unfairly with the constant blame. The belief is that the actions of these terrorists should not make Muslims feel that they now need to be on the defensive.

Those attending will include George Galloway MP for Bradford West and faith leaders.

Over 900 people on social media have confirmed their attendance and the organisers have suggested that people wishing to attend the protest come with a green ribbon to represent peace.

BRADFORD VS MILLWALL THIRD ROUND REPLAY MATCH REPORT

0

By Ayyaz Malik

Bradford manager Phil Parkinson was sent to the stands against Millwall – but that made little difference as Bradford won comfortably 4-0 to book a FA Cup  fourth round trip to Chelsea.

Bradford bounced back from the disappointing defeat by Rochdale on the weekend, with an emphatic win FA Cup win over Championship side Millwall, who were reduced to ten men.

With a chance to meet Chelsea in the next round in what will surely be a money spinning tie, little motivation was needed you would have thought to win this one.

The home side Bradford who lost their 10 match unbeaten run over the weekend against play off rivals Rochdale, came into this match looking to avenge that defeat, Ben Williams starts in goal after Jordan Pickford’s red card at the weekend. Billy Knott who has been in good form for the Bantams of late also starts.

As for the visitors Millwall who lost to fellow strugglers Blackpool over the weekend, They would have been looking of the FA Cup as a way of escaping their disappointing league form. The South Londoners had Scott McDonald who set up two of the three goals in the first tie, on the bench – but his strike partner of the first tie, Ricardo Fuller starts.

With a glamour tie against Chelsea at stake it was the home side Bradford who came out of the blocks quicker. Millwall’s Mark Beevers received an early red card for preventing a clear goal scoring opportunity as the last man. If The Lions’ task wasn’t already difficult, playing against a noisy home crowd, the red card made it even more difficult.

After the dismissal of Beevers, Bradford took to the lead through a corner almost immediately. James Hanson was the man to open the scoring in the seventh minute, in what would turn out to be a goal fest for the home side . Millwall who were a goal down and a man down were poor throughout the contest, and it was of little surprise that John Stead grabbed Bradford’s second.

Two goals down and the game seeming out of Millwall’s reach lead to emotions boiling over, Millwall skipper Andy Dunne’s foul lead to a melee which lead Bradford manager Phil Parkinson being sent to the stands.

The dismissal of their manager made little difference to Bradford as the Championship side again struggled to deal with a set piece, and Stead was on hand to tuck the ball home to put Bradford firmly in control after 17 minutes.

Millwall never looked likely to get back into this one and it was of little surprise when the third goal came for the home side after 38 minutes. Andy Halliday was the man this time to benefit from yet more woeful Millwall defending.

The visitors 3-0 down and a man down would have been desperate for half time, when halftime did eventually come – to Millwall’s relief their was no further damage done to the scoreline. Millwall were still just as poor after the break and Billy Knott capped the win by adding a fourth for the Bantams. The only surprise in this game that there wasn’t more goals to the home side. The poor performance by Millwall, lead their chairmen after the game to say that all tickets will be refunded.

A very impressive victory for Bradford who now face Premier League giants Chelsea in the fourth round. The Bantams were brilliant as much as Millwall were poor – but Bradford have nothing to lose and a lot to gain as surely a good pay day awaits.

9-year-old Archie’s wish comes true as he meets PM

Today a wish came true for nine-year-old Archie Hill, who has the life-limiting muscle-wasting condition, Duchenne muscular dystrophy and wrote to David Cameron in a bid to meet him and ask for his help.

Archie Hill meeting PM David Cameron_credit Chris O'DonovanThe Prime Minister surprised the youngster from Gerrards Cross and his family outside 10 Downing Street this afternoon, as they handed in a petition calling on the NHS to end delays to a breakthrough treatment, Translarna.

Backed by the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign, Archie was among a hundred people who gathered at Westminster today to appeal for urgent access to the drug which could help keep children like Archie* to keep walking for longer.

Translarna is available in other European countries, but families here are facing an agonising wait owing to administrative delays. Children must be able to walk to be eligible for the drug and there are fears many children will miss out entirely through losing their ability to walk before NHS England makes the drug available.

Archie Hill at No 10 Downing Street_credit Chris O'DonovanArchie said: “I was happy to meet the Prime Minister and to give him my letter. He was very nice and asked me about my football team.”

In response to a question from MP Dave Anderson during Prime Minister’s Questions today, Mr Cameron said: I will try to find time to see those parents today. I was looking at this issue last night and there was a child, who was about the same age as my son, pictured with his local football team, just as my son was. It made me think how vital it is to get these drugs through as quickly as we can. I know that there has been a debate on whether these drugs should be licensed quickly and on all the issues and problems. I will meet those parents, look at their petition and see what can be done.

Meeting the Hill family, the Prime Minister promised to look into the issues surrounding Translarna and to speak with the Secretary of State, Jeremy Hunt MP, in order to speed up access to the drug through the NHS.

Louisa, Archie’s mum, said: “We are just so proud of Archie and absolutely thrilled the Prime Minister took the time to stop and speak with him. Archie is amazing, he has been fantastic today. Living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy is just so much for a nine-year-old to deal with. He knows that there is a medicine out there that could help him keep playing football for longer. That means everything to our little boy.

“There is no one in the country in a better position to do something about these delays than David Cameron. He had seen Archie’s letter and took a genuine interest in what the problems are in getting Translarna and how he might be able to help us.

“There are so many people here today showing their support for families like ours. We need Translarna now, not in six months time, now. We desperately hope the Prime Minister can help.

Robert Meadowcroft, Chief Executive of the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign said: “We are absolutely delighted for Archie that his wish came true today. The chance to meet the Prime Minister and ask for his help doesn’t come along every day. It means a great deal to us and our supporters that he was willing to show Archie this support.

“That said, it is appalling that Archie, his parents and all these families have been put in this position in the first place. Duchenne muscular dystrophy causes irreversible muscle damage and we don’t have time to waste while a bureaucratic muddle is unravelled. We now hope Mr Cameron will take a serious look at this issue, with the urgency it deserves, to ensure all the 80 boys like Archie have fast access to this promising new treatment.”
