No Songs in Akshay Kumar’s Baby

0

Director Neeraj Pandey continues to make films in a rather unconventional manner. The man responsible for some amazing thrillers has adopted a rather international approach to his forthcoming film, Baby and decided to do away with the songs.

Baby 8The director feels that a film’s main purpose is to engage audiences into its story. Given that Baby is a slick, espionage thriller heavy on gruelling action sequences and stunts, a song was never required or appropriate.

While it is a unique film with no songs, Bhushan Kumar’s high-octane thriller has come up with a novel theme song. The track, titled Beparwah, reflects the theme of the film and is an ode to the attitude of its characters. The makers recently released the audio track, which is fast stirring a buzz on social media.

The gorgeous Esha Gupta, who represents sensuality and glamour that manifests itself in the tone and attitude of the film, shot for the theme song with the music composed by Meet Brothers. The song, which reminisces the various on-goings happening in one’s country, underlines the attitude of the film and, as the makers of the film have stated, history is made by those who give a damn, for those who think selflessly and put country first. A highly stylised set was created especially for the theme song with two distinct looks – one a pristine, angelic white setting and the other a sensuous and mysterious play with darkness. Both looks are plush, accentuated and perfectly capture the mood of the song.

Police Treating Armed Robberies In Bradford and Leeds As Linked

0

Police investigating three armed robberies in Bradford and Leeds have appealed for information.

At about 5.45pm on Monday, 12 December, four men entered a house in Rockland Crescent, Clayton, and demanded to know where one of the occupants was.

Three of the men were carrying knives, while the other was in possession of what appeared to be a sawn-off shotgun.

The men then searched the premises and are believed to have taken a ladies’ Michael Kors watch, before running off towards Woodvale Avenue.

At about 7pm, a man entered a house in Wooler Avenue, Beeston, and made demands for gold jewellery from one of the occupants.

The man, who was believed to be carrying a gun, was followed by four other men who were also carrying weapons, possibly knives.

The men made threats towards the occupants before searching the premises. They are believed to have taken a quantity of jewellery.

At about 7.45pm, three or four men carrying weapons entered a house in Broad Lane, Bradford and ordered the occupants to sit down and be quiet.

The men then made demands and threats for jewellery and cash before leaving with a quantity of cash.

The suspects are believed to be white men in their late teens or early twenties. All wore black balaclavas and black gloves.

Detective Inspector Ryan Bragg, of Bradford District CID, said: “The descriptions of the males involved in these incidents lead us to believe that they may be linked, so we would appeal to anyone who might have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the above areas around the stated times to get in touch.

“A black Mitsubishi L200 vehicle or similar was seen in the area at the time of all three offences and we believe that this was used by the suspects, so I would ask anyone with information about that vehicle to come forward.

“Police are focusing high-visibility patrols in these areas of Bradford and Leeds following these incidents, and we would urge anyone with any concerns to speak to our officers.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Bradford District CID on 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Dementia care complex to be built in Bradford

0

Bradford MP, David Ward has warmly welcomed Government funding which has enabled the construction of a £8 million Bradford care complex which will be a centre of excellence for dementia and residential care for older people.

DSCN5901David Ward visited the Dudley Hill site at the Gateway Care Village in order to see the construction of the Care village and how it is expected to generate around 146 jobs and provide accommodation for more than 90 residents.

Jill Kemp, one of the Gateway’s senior management team,  explained that the development was a real team effort which followed five years of planning and consultation with the dementia mapping team at the University of Bradford, Stirling University’s dementia design team, the Contented Dementia Trust and Bradford Council’s adult services team.

Government funding of £5m from the Local Enterprise Partnership is being used to create the centre which will be the first location in the North to use a model of care called SPECAL which can bring about immediate and sustainable improvements in the quality of life of the person with dementia.

It treats dementia as a disability and works positively with it, rather than trying to ignore or defeat it. This can increase the person’s confidence, decrease stress, slow the rate of deterioration which can lead to reductions in the use of medications.

DSCN5972Commenting David Ward MP said: “I was very pleased to go and see the construction of these exciting new facilities which are not only bringing much needed jobs into the area but also making available 1st class dementia and care facilities.

“Bradford has some fabulous dementia care and facilities, and with 1 in 3 of us likely to suffer from some form of dementia in our lives, investing in dementia care now is essential.

“I’m very pleased that it’s this Government that is championing the fight against dementia by building the right facilities and investing hundreds of millions of pounds over the next 5 years in dementia research.”

Technology in India takes another leap ahead with immortalised 3D printed model of SRK

0

Technology in India has stepped up its game once again with the world’s first 3D printed model of Shahrukh Khan. Khan was immortalised by the Red Chillies VFX team as they gifted the superstar with the model for his birthday which was in November.

IMG_2256Khan expressed his excitement of the model on twitter when he wrote last night “How fantastic is my Team Red Chillies v/fx. Fully made in India the first 3D lifesize printout. My best B’Day present.”

He also mentioned the intricate detailing of the model being so lifelike that it shows the folds in his shirt and his dimples “Even the folds in the shirt and trousers are captured in such detail…and if I may add the dimples too.”

Khan said he was “Excited by this technology” and would be presenting more images to his fans on twitter, which he did. The print, which looks like a metal cast of the actor, has been made in the shape of Khan’s legendary signature step with his arms wide open.

IMG_2255Khan already has a wax statue in New York’s Madame Tussauds and London’s Madame Tussauds and has now been honoured with this model in India.

Bradford’s New Years Resolutions

0

By Aalia Khan

New Year, new start, new me; we’ve all heard this line many times, over the many years. But what does Bradford need to change or enhance this year? How can we better our city?

We looked at some of the New Years Resolutions Bradford needs to adopt in 2015:

david wardDavid Ward MP said “I believe that the two most important things for the success of Bradfordians in the next year and beyond is economic growth to continue the very welcome fall in unemployment that has occurred in the last 12 months, and secondly an increase in the level of educational attainment in our schools, particularly in schools serving deprived communities.”

Cllr Ralph Berry believed that education needs to be made a top priority for Bradford in 2015; his New Year’s Resolutions for 2015 were; “To create a City that nurtures and values all children, to get more employers and businesses working with schools, to get more arts, drama and music in all our schools. I also really hope for a year where we take mental health more seriously and I hope for a year
when we start tackling Child and family poverty.”

Tony Hallwood, Aviation Development Director at Leeds Bradford Airport, pointed out his New Year’s Resolutions for the city:

“The city must talk positively about the exciting future ahead for Bradford.

The city needs to shout about its successes and raise its profile on the national stage.

Bradford needs to put its full weight and support behind its Football and Super League teams.

bradfordBradford should promote its cultural diversity and celebrate its traditions and festivals.

Finally everyone in Bradford should look to support and fly from Yorkshire’s gateway airport, Leeds Bradford!”

Deputy chief executive of QED Foundation Adeeba Malik believes “More support need to be given to the business community, we must ensure that our education provision is better and upwards in terms of educational attainment and people have respect for one another too.”

Public members also shared their New Years Resolutions, these consisted of:

The completion of the Broadway Bradford shopping centre

Keeping streets clean and litter free

Ensuring many people are within employment

Ensuring education is at the highest standard possible, and children are in a great position of being employed when they complete their education

People learning to respect one another’s beliefs and religions

Healthy eating is another resolution that many people are adopting in the New Year, as such Bradford Council will be launching healthy eating courses this year to give people the confidence and skills needed to prepare healthy meals. The New Year Cook and Eat programmes will offer people the chance to learn a range of dishes, understand their ingredients and how to control ones portion sizes.

Alison Moore, Senior Public Health Manager for Bradford Council said “Cooking is a skill that will stay with you for the rest of your life. Many people want to change the way they eat to be healthier but don’t know how to prepare healthy meals. By giving people the confidence in the kitchen; they can take control of their and their family’s meals before it becomes a health issue.

“Being overweight is linked with a higher risk of developing a range of conditions such as diabetes, cancer and heart disease, as well as mental health problems such as low mood and depression.”

Additionally in order to tackle waste management, Bradford Council’s Executive is being asked to endorse a new Municipal Waste Minimisation and Management Strategy. The aim of the strategy is to first reduce and then recycle as much household waste as possible. Councillor Andrew Thornton, Executive Member for Environment, Sport and Sustainability, said “Our new waste strategy aims to households recycling more and reducing the amount of waste that ends up in the green wheelie bin.”

Bradford has put itself on the map with the many positives of the city such as the Broadway Bradford shopping centre, The Alhambra Theatre, fantastic food places, City Park’s beautiful fountains and our cultural diversity. Bradford can soon become one of the best cities in England when we work on our weaknesses and enhance our strengths. So let’s hope these 2015 resolutions are maintained and met.

PK review

0

By Aalia Khan

pkAamir Khan yet again wowed the audiences in PK, which depicts in a simplistic form the sensitive subject of organised religion and those who would exploit it for personal gain. In a light hearted, comedic manner PK (Aamir khan) teaches audiences not to blindly believe anything they are told and to use their own logic and common sense at times.

Pk’s innocence shines through when he lands on earth as an alien (Don’t worry it’s not a spoiler) and goes in search of his remote control, which was stolen from him on his arrival, to return back home.

PK travels to Delhi to find his remote only to be told ‘God only knows where it is’, taking a literal meaning out of this response PK goes in search of God to demand for his remote to be returned to him. His strange behaviour leads to everyone questioning him if he is PK (Tipsy) hence his name becoming PK.

Along the way PK embarks on many adventures in which he learns about the various different religions that co-exist in a single society. As well as religion he also learns the mannerisms, dress sense and dialects of human beings.

pk posterKhan’s acting in the film is no less than expected from the brilliant actor and his co-actor Anushka Sharma has also played her part as a TV journalist, fascinated by PK’s tale though initially disbelieving of it, really well. Her look in the film however was not very attractive, compared to the abs and muscles of Aamir, and her hairdo, which was not required for her role did not do her any favours.

Pk’s story and child like behaviour draws Anushka into helping him find his remote, and also using PK and his questions on religion and life to challenge the Hindu guru Tapasvi Maharajon her TV show and exposing his fraudulent ways.

Boman Irani plays the TV channels anchor/producer but his superb acting is not utilised well in the film, making him seem like a background actor.

The film as a whole was hilarious, adventurous, and a tad bit emotional and few life lessons of love and equality are taught along the way.

It is definitely worth a watch and I would give it ****/***** for the brilliant acting and humour presented in the film but a little short than five stars due to the lack of Boman Irani’s presence and Anushka’s appearance.

British Muslim Woman Adeeba Malik talks CBE, family, food and favourite holiday destination

By Aalia Khan

Adeeba Malik was one of the only two Muslims in England to be awarded a CBE in the New Year’s Honours list. She is the Deputy Chief Executive of QED Foundation, and she received the prestigious award for her services as a British Muslim woman on mainstream public bodies.

AdeebaAdeeba, who has previously been honoured with an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for services to ethnic minority businesses, has held many ministerial and non-ministerial high profile national and regional board level appointments in the last 15 years. These have been diverse organisations including British Waterways, Yorkshire Forward, and the Advisory Board on Naturalisation and Immigration; many of which she was the first Asian woman to serve on.

The Commander of the Order of the British Empire is awarded for having a distinguished, innovative contribution in a prominent role at national level, or a leading role at regional level.

Adeeba said “I am humbled and honoured to receive such a prestigious award and to be recognised for my work which I have always enjoyed. I remember how I felt when I received the MBE, and then to be honoured with a CBE is very special.” She says she had to explain the award to her mother but once she understood it was “A very pleasant and delightful moment which brought great joy and pride for the family.” She went on “It’s been an award not just for me but for them too.”

Adeeba also acknowledged the support and help she has gained from Mohammed Ali, founder and Chief Executive of QED “I have been fortunate to have the support from Mohammed Ali over the years to do the work I was interested in.”

Adeeba is currently Deputy Chief Executive of Bradford-based QED Foundation, a leading and respected national development agency. Founded in 1990, QED is working with ethnic minorities to eradicate poverty, disadvantage and discrimination. Adeeba joined QED in 1992 after one year of teaching in a Bradford school. She has supported QED to become one of the most influential organisations of its kind in the UK.

Mohammed Ali OBE said: “QED has been campaigning for 25 years for ethnic minorities to play mainstream roles in all walks of British life. Adeeba has demonstrated just that. As a British Muslim woman she contributed to the mainstream agenda of public sector boards and her CBE is a great recognition of her hard work. We are all proud of her.”

According to Adeeba discrimination, poverty and various forms of inequalities are still major issues within society which need to be tackled. She says “Equality and fairness still needs to be embedded within our society, and we must create an opportunity for everyone.” For individuals to play their part in eradicating the problems they need to “Take opportunities to get into a position which allows you to be educated and skilled. Start off from yourself and then help others” she says.

Adeeba’s inspiration arises from her mother and her achievements have fared back many years; in 2005 she was appointed Chair of the National Ethnic Minority Business Forum based in the Department for Trade and Industry, and became a Commissioner for the Women and Work Commission set up by then Prime Minister, Tony Blair. In 2011 she was appointed to the Department of Energy &Climate Change Green Deal Women’s Panel.  In 2011, she was also a governor of Sheffield Hallam University, and she was made an ambassador for the Hashoo Foundation, a Pakistan based charity.  She continues to speak at high profile events at national and international level and has won numerous awards.
